The Church of St. John the Baptist is perched high above the main street of #Cavusin, with expansive, uninterupted views across the valley looking westwards towards the setting sun. It is understandable why this position was chosen for the construction of this church in the C5th. It is said to be the oldest and largest church in Cappadocia. The frescos are quite weathered and damaged, but I did manage to find a couple of angels painted on the ceiling dome above the area where the alter once stood.

The Church of St. John the Baptist is perched high above the main street of #Cavusin, with expansive, uninterupted views across the valley looking westwards towards the setting sun. It is understandable why this position was chosen for the construction of this church in the C5th. It is said to be the oldest and largest church in Cappadocia. The church certainly feels spacious, and it appears that the open archways that run from the #chancel (area around the altar) to the rear of the church were filled with rocks and mortar in at some point in history (possibly to limit the risk of collapse). So originally in the C5th the church would have had a nave (central area) with a North and South Aisle, which is pretty impressive for a cave.

Looking up towards the Church of St John the Baptist from the main street of Cavusin. The Church of St. John the Baptist is perched high above the main street - the large, dark, rectangular opening at the top of the rock, in the centre of the photo, was where I entered the church. It is said to be the oldest and largest church in Cappadocia.
