I'll be sharing my love of art, plants and wildlife with you this week ⠀ ⠀ 'Summer Cicadas' / Teagan White⠀ ⠀ The humble cicada. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Socrates had a beautiful theory about these insects. He proposed they were the souls of humans who lived long before the creation of the Muses. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ At the foot of mount Olympus, the Titan Mnemosyne gave birth to the nine Muses; and with them the art of song came into being. When the humans heard this new music, they were so overwhelmed with the pleasure of singing that they forgot to eat or drink - and so they passed away - entranced, enthralled, still singing, without ever even realising it. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Rather than lose the beauty of song, the Muses gave mankind a gift - a second-life. Those singers would be reborn again in the race of the cicadas. These little creatures would need no nourishment, other than the dew and air - and with their first breath they would immediately burst into a deep, rolling, rippling hum that would fill the air as if the earth itself had grown lungs and was singing...⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ It's a beautiful idea.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Also, only the males can make that idiosyncratic noise - it’s actually a mating call. So, if you think about it, that trembling, thrumming cicada sound is actually a kind of love song ... ⠀⠀ ⠀
