First harvest and we’re really happy with how things are going at the allotment at the moment - despite someone nicking our tarp and tap, and an aphid invasion on plants and fruit trees.

Reposted from @ogunmodfarmersacademy - Cucumber is one of the most popular vegetables widely consumed, Cucumber can grow in any state in the country not only in the north as we have been told. In cultivating cucumber, the type of soil, you choose contributes a lot to the success of your cucumber, in considering your soil is better to consider loamy-clay soil., this helps to retain and absorb water cos cucumber requires water. The land should not be shaded as cucumber require sunlight for growth
Another determinate to the success of your cucumber farm is getting good and quality seeds. Thailand seeds are good cos we have almost similar weather conditions, it can be purchase in Nigeria
In preparing your land for cultivation, it is advisable not to use herbicides for weeding, this might affect the growth of your cucumber. Make your beds for appropriate and coordinated spacing. Moisten the soil if it is dry, Fertilize the soil before planting your cucumber, you can use NPK 15:15:15 or you can also use organic manure but it is recommended that you use organic manure to make the soil natural and for the health of the crops.
after getting the right seeds and preparing your land, now it is time to plant your cucumbers seeds, some farmers do plant them in nursery and then transplant them to the main field, but it is highly recommended to plant your seeds directly to the soil because cucumbers have very fragile root, and this can be damages during the period of transplanting. When planting the seed, it should be about 1 inch into the soil.
After planting or immediately after sprouting, you should build stakes up the beds to support the cucumber leaves as they grow because cucumbers are climbers and so they require supports to grow. Weed with hand 20-30 days after planting.
Apply liquid fertilizer preferably, organic fertilizer every two week, try to prevent the leaves from turning yellow, but if it does, do apply high nitrogen fertilizer but do not over fertilize the plants.
