What kind of reusable bag do you use?
More than 127 countries have banned plastic bags due to their harmful environmental impacts. But cotton tote bags, which have been marketed as the "greener" substitute to plastic, may not be the friendliest option when it comes to manufacturing.
A recent Danish study found that, while plastic bags are not biodegradable, and are a major ocean pollutant, making plastic bags is easier on the environment than making cotton bags. "If you had to choose just one, and had nothing at the moment, maybe a really durable plastic bag that you can use for a very long time and not throw out," said Zoë Schlanger, who recently explored what the best type of shopping bag might be, environmentally, in an article for Quartz.
Eeeeeep !!!!Excited to reveal that these hand painted recycled cotton bags are up for grabs .Perfect for carrying your travel art supplies don’t you think ?

Produce bags! My previous post was about shopping/grocery bags. But what about produce bags, those smaller plastic see-through bags for loose fruit and veg? Those bags are good for keeping your produce clean (from the cart and the conveyor belt) and together, but they're also seen as single-use. Here are some ideas on how to carry your naked produce to check-out!
::
• Some veggies don't need individual bags! Think produce with skin that you'll remove anyway, like onions and avocados, so they can go straight in your cart Also, washing your produce really well is a good option for going bagless.
• Reuse plastic baggies if you have some. Again, "single-use" doesn't have to be! ♻️
• Use paper bags from the mushroom section if you forget your bags
• Get yourself some reusable cloth or mesh produce bags! Info below :) If you're concerned about them adding too much to the total weight, choose lightweight bags like polyester mesh
::
Now where to get cloth bags?
• Thrift stores! Most of ours are from thrift stores for $1 each
• Make your own :) There are great DIY tutorials online, sew and no-sew, and you can use fabric, t-shirts, pillow cases, bed sheets, curtains, doilies, etc. Using what you have or second-hand are great options! A couple that I've made are the yellow one in the pic from a table cloth and the curved mesh from a doilie
• Local makers, like @theupcyclery (using upcycled materials!) and @shoplot8 in Toronto, and @gardenofreusables in Ptbo/Cobourg. I have my own project related to this coming up for the @cobourgfarmersmarket ;) Details to come!
• Eco stores and bulk stores - Some brands are @credobags, @carebags7860, @chicobag, #stewardbags, @bulkbarnfoods, @dans_le_sac. Check your local green store!
• Online eco/zero waste stores, Amazon and Etsy. Just remember to request minimal or plastic-free packaging :)

This is a little sneak peek into our once a month (or more!) #buyinbulk Stash! (Blog post coming real soon❤️).
.
We were lucky enough to find an amazing #lowwaste bulk store less than a 40 minute drive from our house and have fallen madly in love.
.
To offset the driving, we stock up for 30 + days with everything that we need! Beans, cranberries, dates, pasta, nuts, seeds, oats and more!
.
Bulk buying is a real learning lesson. One thing we learned? Oats, pasta and popcorn are great for budgets! Cranberries are not . You should have seen my face when I realized I spent 40 bucks on dried cranberries haha!!! #woops
.
For our #clothbags, we ran around the house looking for just about anything we could reuse. The boys were gifted some lovely rain boots from a family member last month and they came in very sturdy gray bags with cinch ties at the top. Those were perfect for our oats obsession!
.
We also had some old t-shirts that were beyond mending that I simply sewed up into cloth bags. I don't know about you, but my beans do not need a fancy bag to make it back to our house .
.
For the remainder of the bags, we decided to purchase the bags sold at the bulk store. We will use these until they are just rags and then use them as rags! #reuse and reuse until they are absolutely destroyed. That's the key to cloth anything - they take a heck of a lot of resources to make and must be used until the very last day of their life cycle.
.
Do you bulk buy? Is your town lacking a bulk buy store?

Me: sweet pea would you like to help mama pack the basket for shopping? I need three bags and one jar...(Later on)...thanks for packing the bags, jar and your plane! Good decision on the plane, we’ll need it for sure! You’re so helpful. High five for helping each other. But do we need a giant ruler and hose connector to shop!
.
Him: why not?
.
Why not indeed ♀️
