The FDA just shared it's growing concerns about the amount of chemicals absorbed into our bodies after just one day of wearing sunscreen and if that doesn't worry you, it probably should . • While yes, we should protect ourselves from sun burns, it's also important to remember that sun is our friend. We NEED sun and we NEED vitamin D and all in all, the sun has amazing health benefits. • Let’s first talk through what SPF even is. SPF stands for sun protection factor. It is a measure of how well an agent blocks UVB rays (the kind that cause skin cancer). When not wearing sunscreen, your skin will naturally change color and incur a certain amount of damage in one hour. If you are wearing an SPF of 2 you will incur that same amount of damage in 2 hours that you would have incurred in one hour without any SPF. An SPF of 10 will get you 10 hours, SPF 30 will get you 30 hours, etc. • Also worth considering: if you do not plan on spending more than 10 hours in the sun, you may not need the 30 hours of protection than an SPF 30 may offer. In fact, when is the last time you saw 30 hours of daylight? • Bottom line, lower SPFs, applied more often, may offer similar sun protection as higher SPFs. When I go out with the kids if were just playing outside or taking a walk, I often don't even use sunscreen, and when I DO, I've always used Young Livings 10 spf sunscreen (they also have 50 spf). I know all the ingredients and its coral reef safe, water resistant and stays on for up to 80 minites. Had a lovely two-hour walk today from the historic Harper’s Ferry, in the corner of West Virginia where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet, down the C&O Canal path to Brunswick, in Maryland. When I left Pittsburgh last Monday it was 35 degrees F out with sideways flurries and sleet. The next 8 hours were beautiful, but rough. The first bartender I encountered on my trip (lunch day 1) commented that I was the first cyclist he’d seen this season. I was doubting my decision to ride all day and evening when I knew it was too cold to camp that night with the gear I brought. I got a hotel room in Ohio Pyle that night and the next 3 days were magic!

I great ride today. I forget how lucky we are to live in the metro DC area. An over 100 mile / 160k ride on the WO&D trail, crossing the Potomac River on Whites Ferry then over to the historic C&O Canal then back on the Martha Custis Trail.
