Welcome to the era of the anti-college. “Mainstream education is failing to help young people find their calling,” writes Molly Worthen. So a host of unconventional alternatives are cropping up. Outer Coast, where students mix manual labour with studying Plato and writing their own rules, is one of them. These anti-colleges “represent a revolt against treating the student as a future wage-earner,” Molly writes. Instead, they want students to think about life's bigger meaning. “It’s a tall order.” But if nothing else, perhaps the movement will push mainstream universities to recognize what students actually need from their education, she says. | Chad Brown #anticollege #collegeeducation #antiinstitution #lifemeaning #experimentalcollege #rethinkingeducation #pushingtheboundaries #holisticeducation #selfdirectedlearning #nytopinion

When I was in college, I didn't really belong to any clubs or go to any social events, I never lived on campus (I was a commuter student and it took approximately 2 hours to get to school via public transit) and to be honest, I never really made any friends. I suppose you could say, that I cheated myself out of a traditional college experience…but that's not really how I see it. I went to college to learn about the world and to get an education and that is exactly what I did. My parents couldn't afford to pay for college, so I emptied my savings account and applied for grants and aid, which I received with the help of a high GPA (I transferred into UCLA with a 4.0 from a community college) and work study job. During that brief window of time, my whole life was about learning and enriching my worldview. I was exposed to so many new ideas and was experiencing such a magical moment that I wanted to share it with the world… and so I started a blog. My blog was a creative outlet where I shared random art, life hacks, and journal entries that started life in the notepad app on my cell phone. I called my blog Annotated Audrey, a name I chose because all of my class notes, books and study guides were always covered in additional notes or annotations. Even though I’m not using my Anthropology degree in the traditional sense, my college education has molded who I am as a person and has no doubt inspired a critical component of my life now. For that, I will be forever grateful.

Is learning a top priority of yours? - It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of education. Not necessarily in the traditional college sense but in that I value learning new things that will enable me to become a greater individual. I love to read and reading honestly has been a staple in my life and has allowed me to recognize opportunities I would have otherwise missed. - While student debt is a real crisis and the majority of you will become a part of it, I want to remind you that there are other ways than just college. You can be extremely intelligent without ever having set foot on a college campus. It does take dedicated effort to desire to learn outside of the traditional sense. The traditional route does a great job at keeping you focused on a “degree” that isn’t as powerful as it was in the past and guarantees you nothing, except maybe debt. - - Outside of that and often overlooked is reading books outside of the college curriculum. There are so many wise people in this world who have published there wisdom and want others to benefit from their experiences. However most of you will get the check in the block degree and stop learning. For those of you who can’t afford to be in student debt, go to your library, borrow a friends book, buy used books, find mentors! - - Don’t let others put you down because you educated yourself alternative to the route everyone is forced into. Educate yourself in your passions followed by pursuing them and you will find success.

I just arrived home to re-charge for a day and was asked about the wedding. Then it dawned on me, if I were to get married home...my wedding would be FREE. My parents would be "expected" to pay for it. And this isn't just my parents, this is many many parents that are expected to get their sons and daughters a college degree, wedding, car, and...home! This is just how the culture is. Mind you....some homes cost $500,000 to build. I've always appreciated this generosity but at the same time hated it. It leads to so much dependence that might hurt kids in the future. I'm sure we're not the only ones like this. Many parents around the world have these expectations from them. Thus...this video! P.S Before you call me a "parent money baby", I haven't taken a single dollar from my parents in 6 years or have any expectations for ANYTHING more from them. I'm quite strict about it. They've already done enough the first 19 years. #nasdaily #college #car #parents #love #family #house #collegeeducation #dependence #independence #money #dollars #expectations #reliance #care #trap
