Happy Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month!
As someone who is mixed ethnicity, being given graduation cords as a member of the APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi / American) society is extremely meaningful to me mostly because being Korean has heavily influenced pretty much everything in my life.
But let’s talk more about this grouping... ASIA IS MASSIVE and is made up of so many different countries and cultures that are not accurately represented in statistical analyses because of this grouping. This under representation often results in lack of adequate resources.
Did you know AAPIs make up ~18% of those living in poverty in NYC? Yet they receive less than 2% of funding from social services.
But why aren’t these numbers (or rather lack there of) talked about more?
➡️THE MODEL MINORITY MYTH
So many assumptions are made about the Asian population in regards to income and education that the large gap in wealth is frequently overlooked. Western societies love to hold strong to their preconceived notions of what/how things should be.
How do we fix this?
.
Education.
Learn about the different Asian cultures, expand beyond East Asian rhetoric. There are 28+ countries and 2,000+ languages!
.
Better metrics.
More studies highlighting the differences between these cultures! This isn’t news but we live in a world where we have to prove the things we know with numbers.
.
✊Representation and support.
AAPI are POC! In recognizing this we need to support other POCs.
And a note to other white passing POC, recognize your privilege and use it to help amplify the message.

This photo is a perfect summary of what is happening today. Probably the only place where life has appeared in our galaxy and it is becoming unbearable for most animal species.
˙
One animal or plant species disappears every 20 minutes, which means 26280 species that have disappeared each year.
˙
But the worst thing is that these are species that will probably never be known because today 86% of them remain unknown.
˙
If we continue like this, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
˙
I hope that this cultural point will at least make you think about and research the human impact on the environment, not think about who is to blame, the companies and the government. They are representations of our needs as citizens, let us change our habits and they will follow.
˙
Let us be the change!
Stephanie Booco, M.A. ’12, uses her education and counseling experience to assist responding officers from Fort Collins Police Services as the department’s first mental health co-responder. “Increasingly, officers are being called to scenes where mental illness is the reason for the call, not a crime. Having a mental health co-responder is a unique tool for officers to deploy because having a civilian on scene with the citizens in need of assistance decreases stress," Booco said, adding that the focus on mental health has fostered an increased rapport between the officers and the community. (3/3) “My job includes going door to door and visiting bottle stores and brothels where I meet sex workers and provide them with information related to HIV testing and how they can take care of their health,” says Margaret, a community health worker. “For those who agree to be tested for HIV we set up a home visit. With these services, I feel more empowered than before and I can negotiate protection with my clients. I know how to put a condom on properly, and we now have lubricant which prevents accidents. While some people used to look at us as animals, things have changed.
.
.
Today, the perception that people have towards sex workers is improved. Today, people understand that HIV affects everyone. And if we are to deal with HIV once and for all, the first step is to accept and recognise that, despite being different, we are all human beings.”

Honored to be nominated by Santa Clara County as a ‘Community Health Hero’ for my advocacy focusing on youth and adolescent mental health and suicide prevention! I think now more than ever our society is understanding the importance of having these conversations about mental health and breaking the stigma. It is okay to not be okay. Let’s continue to educate our communities on how to process our feelings, build resilience, support one another through difficult times, and access mental health resources. Please contact me if you are interested in getting involved in advocacy work in your local community or need help getting connected to resources! #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #SantaClaraCounty #PublicHealth #CommunityHealth #Advocacy #BreakTheStigma
Meet @lialoveavellino, our Director of Head & Heart! As a therapist, Lia understands the importance of our emotional connections and relationships. We asked her to share more about that for the last day of #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth. Check out our Stories () to follow along.
.
And just because Mental Health Awareness Month is coming to an end doesn’t mean we should focus any less on our mental health. It deserves our full attention, all the time. ❤️
