COURAGE~COMPETENCE~CONFIDENCE I created this tagline after writing an article for @MovNat. In it I said you can develop self-confidence through physical competence. After it was published I reflected further on that statement and realized it was missing something. It's not untrue, it's just not the whole story, so I updated it to reflect what I truly believe to be the path toward confidence in all areas of life, not just in a movement practice. It is so important to me it is now embedded in my email signature. ;) . Confidence is not built by being good at something. Confidence it built by overcoming fear, hesitation, or discouragement in trying something. The process toward confidence continues through the practice of improving that skill... becoming more competent the more you practice until you eventually own it. When you no longer experience fear or hesitation you have truly gained confidence at that skill (note: confidence does not always result in successful completion!). . A non-physical example is a breakup convo. How many of you have stayed with someone because you didn't want to have "the talk?" You finally pep-talk yourself into it... In the moment you almost chicken out but then muster the courage to say, "Can we talk?" Having difficult conversations takes courage, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. You realize that honesty and authenticity is always better, and eventually you will confidently look forward to these types of conversations because you know the outcome is greater than the discomfort of the process. . When I am afraid of something (like spraining my ankle on a big jump to a precision landing) I start with a small jump. When I can successfully complete that several times I gain competence. Confidence comes when I can walk up to that jump and just do it without fear. The process starts over again when I take a step back: Courage~Competence~Confidence. I keep increasing the distance and repeating the process: Courage~Competence~Confidence. Then, one day, I will be able to approach large jumps with no fear. Courage~Competence~Confidence.
