The speaker/attendee badge…It’s a big problem! Typically, it’s plastic and attached to a lanyard and ends up at the bottom of my suitcase to be thrown out later. Or, when I get home, it ends up in a drawer so I can show my parents I have a ‘real’ job. Then it’s thrown out later. Or, I throw it out as soon as I get to the airport.
Now, @wds.official badge presented a special challenge, as it wasn’t your average badge, it was Plexiglas (as illustrated in photo 1). And WDS’s whole thing is: traveling consciously, creating community and being of service.
So, I didn’t want to throw it out, but I didn’t know the heck to do with it either.
I decided to take my own damn advice and apply a principle from my book Creative Trespassing to solve this badge problem: #2 Transform the Norm.
1.List the core values of the organization.
a.In WDS case its: traveling consciously, creating community, being of service
2.Find the tension between the organization’s values (and/or website) and on the ground realities.
a.WDS is super aligned with its values and on the ground realties!! Alas, those damn badges!! But they are better constructed and could serve a purpose…If only I was a Creative Trespasser!?!
3.Accelerate Alignment. Brainstorm creative ways to connect the object (and/or website) with the values, mission and vision of the organization!
And now I present to you the… #wds2019 coaster! Now, listen up ALL Conference Organizers: Steal this Creative Trespassing idea, PU-LEAZE!! And make badges that serve a purpose while aligning with your core values! This has been an ACT: Announcement of Creative Trespassing...Now get to creative work!
