Female neolecanium cornuparvum — magnolia scale insect (about 10mm), also known as tulip tree scale insect. Hard to spot and easy to photograph since they are immobile in this phase of their lives. These odd little characters are insects in the order Hemiptera (True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids) and make their living sucking the sap out of trees and other plants. In this case, the insect is dining on a tulip poplar (a common tree in my area). ⠀ ⠀ Normally, I try to show the creature's face but these little beggars don't have eyes. That's her rear end on the right and she will eject honeydew from the small dark area. In North America, over a dozen species of ants are known to "guard" these insects and harvest their honeydew.⠀ ⠀ Their life cycle goes roughly like this: A female (like the one on the photo) lays eggs. ⠀ ⠀ When the eggs hatch the first instar nymphs (known as crawlers) come out from under mum’s skirt and wander about on the plant. They need a good location because once they settle down and start feeding on the plant’s sap they will become immobile. Yup, they basically lose the use of their legs. Presumably, the sap is so darned good they don’t want to move. Like really, really good pizza — you just have to sit and eat it).⠀ ⠀ Anyway, those first instar nymphs overwinter wherever they settled and become immobile. Come spring, they feed like crazy (presumably as sap rises). The females will go through three instars. By contrast, the males emerge from their final instar with wings and fly about looking for females with whom to mate. The females, of course, are sensibly sitting on the branch (with the pizza).⠀ ⠀ The males get a raw deal as adults: They don't eat and die after mating. Swipe for a different specimen. ⠀ Shot in the field using Olympus OM-D E-M1ii. The crane fly (limonia species likely — thank you, @soorsjan for the tip!) and the millipede. I’m guessing crane flies are named for their extremely long legs — but millipedes are definitely named for their many legs which are stubby and seldom stop moving. I found these two while the millipede was scavenging on the log and the crane fly was taking a nap. Stretch to see the crane fly’s tiny head. ⠀ ⠀ Shot in the field using Olympus OM-D E-M1ii. We are nearing the end of another very successful lynx capture season. In a couple months we will transition to lynx den visits and snowshoe hare surveys. . . Often people are curious where our research is taking place. It’s hard to explain the geographical extent of the Lynx Project without using a map to do so. We presently have study animals throughout interior Alaska as well as Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia, Canada. Without question, this project has become the largest lynx satellite tracking effort ever. . . We hope you enjoy the photo and video of lynx being released from log box traps as well as the map that provides a good overview of where our collared cats are currently roaming. Northwestern North America is our study area. #canadalynx #canadalynxresearch #wildlifeconservation #conservationbiology #wildlife #wildlifephotography #landscapeconnectivity #wildlifedispersal #science #thelynxproject

Without a doubt, the most helpless orangutans at the Care Center are the infant orphans who often arrive malnourished, sick, & traumatized. The love&care of a mother can never be replaced but OFI caregivers provide as much support as they can as surrogate mothers to the babies! #orangutan #primates #endangeredspecies #conservationbiology #rainforests #palmoilfree #wildlife #conservation #protectourplanet
