We had 26 releases today! Those animals released today include the starlings that were rescued from the dumpster in Portland, common grackles that were inappropriately raised, our last barred owl from this winter, pigeons, geese and a red bellies woodpecker, which is shown in this video, who had hit a window and had a terrible broken wing. Today was a great day!
These releases are made possible by support from individuals such as yourself. Thank you! Happy Saturday! We hope you do something enriching this weekend! Enrichment is an important part of the care of not only our non-releasable ambassador family but also our patients. Enrichment can come in the form of a variety of foods, how that food is delivered, habitat enrichment, activity enrichment, sense enrichment, and, as you can enjoy here with Dante, our non-releasable American crow, toy enrichment! Dante likes to undo anything you do, it’s one of his favorite games. Currently he has “hidden” a few of these rings where we can’t reach them as a way to show us who is boss! Violet, our non-releasable turkey culture who shares her enclosure with Dante, had also been enjoying the toys. She however has a favorite dog toy that is a flamingo that she runs around with. We also make enrichment toys for them as well!
Would you be interested in donating toys or enrichment items from our Amazon Wishlist? You can view it at https://www.thecenterforwildlife.org/wish-list. When this little guy gets brought in for his first check-up , weighing just 1.9 kg ❤️ This little warrior is a Persian Leopard, a subspecies with less than 1200 individuals left in the world and a continuously decreasing population in the wild.
Every birth is extremely important and this one here is the result of lots of hard work by animal care staff that needs to be highlighted and appreciated❤️
Keep growing strong just like your parents little one!

Happy Thursday! Remember the cottontail who’s nest was destroyed and was the sole survivor of her siblings? Thanks to expert care and nutrition she grew from eyes closed to being independent and ready for release in about a month. We were so happy to release her for a second chance yesterday!! After checking out her surroundings she instinctively knew to get low and hide, and disappeared into the shrubs. She’s been through so much, to see her wild and among the clover and dandelion on her own is an inspiration Eastern cottontails are a high prey species that loves the forest to field edge habitat. They nest on the ground, and have evolved to develop rapidly and become independent in just 4-5 weeks. This makes sense as it wouldn’t work for prey to remain vulnerable for very long. Their camouflage, incredibly sensitive hearing, and swift movements make them a fair match for predators. Farewell, tiny survivor#environmentaleducation #conservationmedicine #centerforwildlife #cfw #easterncottontail
Spring is in full swing and our phones are ringing off the hook and we are admitting more and more patients daily. These 4 Virginia opossum siblings were found on their deceased mom after she had been killed by a car.
We are currently in need of donations of bleach, hand sanitizer, plain tissues, toilet paper, paper towels, gift cards to Hannafords and Home Depot as well as the items listed on our website wish list at www.thecenterforwildlife.org. You can also make monetary donations on our website as well. Thank you so very much for your amazing and ongoing support. Support from people like you help to make cases like these opossum siblings successes. #conservationmedicine #environmentaleducation #centerforwildlife #cfw #virginiaopossum #babyseason

Literally thrown away in the trash. Cases like these baffle and sadden is. These four baby starlings were rescued from a dumpster when a person passing by heard them calling, muffled by the plastic trash bag they were in and the garbage on top of them. Upon inspecting the noise, this kind community member found the for babies in amongst coffee grounds and other garbage. The entire nest and babies had all been tossed away without care by someone on the Portland waterfront. If they had not been found, these babies would’ve slowly starved to death or been crushed under more garbage and suffocated. The cruelty, lack of empathy, and complete disregard for life leaves us at a loss. One of the babies suffered a broken leg. The other three are confused, hungry, and subdued especially for this species. We cannot imagine how confusing this must be for them as well as for their parents who returned to find the nest and babies gone. They are within about a week from starting to fledge, which makes it even more frustrating. There are so many ways to humanely live alongside wildlife, and there is never a justification for simply tossing a life away in the trash. While their prognosis is guarded, we are hopeful that with supportive care they will make a complete recovery and be able to be released. Does this story hit home for you? These cases happen far too often.
With no state or federal funding, every donation towards our work helps to benefit animals like these siblings. Please visit our website at www.thecenterforwildlife.org to make a donation and to find out the many ways you can help wildlife. Thank you.
