Sleeping Beauties and Cell are a couple. • I think I dislike Sleeping Beauties so much because I was so disappointed. I was expecting so much more and I just didn’t get it. • Cell started out pretty awesome and then died and it died fast. Book Club Editions (BCE) versus First Editions. I’ve received a few messages over the past few months asking if a certain book is a first edition or not, so I figured I would take a few posts to talk about the differences between the two. . . This whole post was started last week after talking with @horrible_henry about the differences in sizes between BCE and first editions, so that’s where I’ll start. This is probably the most confusing part about telling the difference between the two. For the most part there are basically two different sizes to King books: the large 9.5” tall and the small 8.5” tall. First editions published by Doubleday (except for Pet Sematary) are the small size, while the large size is always BCE. (See Salem’s Lot in photo: left is 1st, right is BCE) But there are also small size BCE, so be careful! As for Doubleday’s Pet Sematary, it’s backwards...first editions are the large size, while the small is BCE, but there are large BCE too! Still with me? For King’s 1980s work published by Viking, first editions are the large size, while all small sizes are BCE (see Firestarter in photo: left is BCE, right is 1st), but yes, you guessed it, there are large size BCE. In fact, the only small size BCE Viking books I’ve ever known of are from the early 80s. There are no small BCE of IT and forward, to my knowledge. . . Because of the mixture in heights and editions, size can never be used solely to declare a book to be a first edition, rather it can only be used solely to determine if a book *isn’t* a first edition. . . Are you more confused now than before you read my post? Good. My work here is done.
