How is control related to trauma?
.
So-called “control issues” (need for control causes distress) are typically an overcompensation for fear of losing control. If you find that you need to be in control, you may fear trusting others’ or letting others be in control; that fear may stem from trauma!
.
Emotional trauma can be anything that has left you feeling powerless, vulnerable, helpless, or caused long-term emotional damage. Our need to control is likely disproportionate & can show up in self-defeating ways. If you’ve survived abuse, you may find that you try to regain control & end up abusing others’ in your life. Another reaction might be avoiding closeness & mistrusting others (scroll back to therapy thought where I talked about attachment styles). Control fixation can also be connected to fears around abandonment, perfectionism, beliefs you developed growing up, low self-worth, mental illness, etc.
.
My eating disorder was a self-destructive control mechanism. Instead of dealing with fear, anxiety, shame, low self-worth, strong emotions, or trauma; I turned to my body & food as a way to control
.
Self-directed or environment-directed “control issues” like an eating disorder might also look like substance abuse, excessive exercising, dieting, self-harming, shopping or cleaning.
.
On the other hand, you may try to control others’ in forms of abuse, helicopter parenting, gaslighting, micromanaging, being overly critical and dissatisfied, manipulating in a relationship, etc.
.
We need to get to the source of our control issues. We need to sift out the reasons we fear losing control and heal those wounds. I’m a HUGE fan of inner-child work for this type of work. I risk sounding like a broken record here, but it’s all about self-compassion and kindly addressing our deeper fears and traumas so we can be free!
.
Counseling is a safe place to do trauma work, as therapists are trained and supervised in evidence based best practices for trauma. Trauma work is sensitive. If you’re looking for more educational support and skills, grab my emotional regulation and self-love courses! tiffanyroe.com
If your MONDAY equals:
✖️Guilt over the extra cookie at the party ✖️’Cheating’ was so fun but now back to asparagus/restriction
✖️Anxiety over how much to eat, what keeps you satisfied
✖️Control over your diet because that will fix everything
.
Then I’ve been there but there is another way ‼️
Guilt, cheating, anxiety, control aren’t things that you are IN your diet. They are words you’ve used to describe aspects of your diet bc it’s how you think about your health. That you must feel guilt over an “un-clean” food. That you have to cheat in order to sustain your lifestyle. That you’re SO confused that food just plain stresses you out. That control is the answer (I want to do another post on this too). Start thinking of your diet in a way that truly changes your perspective . This is about health, not about all the words you associate with your diet.
➡️What ONE word would you use to describe your diet?

The sun will rise everyday but it will not shine everyday. .

Learning to accept the things that are out of your control is a hard lesson to learn.
.
.
But taking control of the things that ARE within your control is the best lesson to learn. ❤️

You control your body. Train it to do what you want it to. .
