Our cows graze fields off the farm during the day then in the evenings the cows have the option to carry on grazing ‘home fields’ or come inside the cattle shed and eat their TMR (total mix ration - this is made up of grass and maize silage with added minerals and concentrates). With our conveyor belt system we need to distribute just the right amount of feed, if we feed too much it’s labour intensive collecting old feed and if we feed it too little it affects cows productivity. On the 5th day of the pool job, we had a patio, steps and pool house pad to pour. The patio sits on top of one of the retaining walls we poured and connects to existing. The steps were the most time consuming of all the concrete we did on this job. Luckily, the elevation change from pool to patio was so close that I just had to rip the very bottom step board about 1/4”. I think it’s fair to say our farm is pretty cool on the mechanisation front. Pros of our new #FeedStar Studies have shown that cows have higher daily forage intakes when presented on a smooth surface. Forage is always available and we no longer require a workmen to push up to feed three times a day. It takes some skill to control the speed the feeder wagon dispensers while controlling the speed the conveyor belt slides along the feed passage. This FeedStar system was the solution to many of our problems. We wanted to increase cattle loafing area without the extravagant cost of a new construction and we wanted our cows to have fresh feed in front of them 24/7 while housed inside. In our old system cows had less space to walk around due to a large feeding passage for the tractor to go down and we had a member of staff pushing up the feed 3 to 4 times a day. Other benefits with the system; less noise, no dust or exhaust gases in the shed. When the conveyor belt returns, all leftover feed is collected and a fresh mixed ration is then distributed. We have seen higher nutritional intake‘s and higher milk outputs!
