I, along with one assistant, spent 3 days outside in 90 degree heat, taking inventory and packing 23 crates of costumes weighing 150-200 pounds per crate, for our location shoot. Our team has been researching, fabric swatching, shopping, renting, and doing fittings for 3 months now and this is only our FIRST round of shipments. AND, these are just the costumes for the extras to be used for a single major scene. The wage gap between the costume department and the rest of the film crew departments displays how misunderstood, under valued, and gender biased our labor is, since a majority of costume departments are female driven. Photos are funny. This one of me is gorgeous, (I’m that teeny person in the bottom right) but here’s the real story behind it. ____________________ Craig had finished his instagram documentary road trip from Chicago to San Francisco (where this photo was taken) It was one of the most memorable experiences he’d had, but for me, it was hard and frustrating. The whole ordeal was isolating and overwhelming for me; I sacrificed a lot for it to go smoothly for him. ____________________ He surprised me with a ticket to meet him at the end of the trip and arranged a sitter to stay with the kids. We spent a couple days in Napa, then we surprised my sister for her birthday in Tahoe (hey, @ruthiehudalla remember that?!) but we spent the last day in SF before we flew home on a red eye. ____________________ On the way down from Tahoe, Craig realized he’d booked the wrong ticket and he had to buy an expensive one on my flight at the last minute and, spoiler alert, I wasn’t happy about it. Craig hadn’t slept much during his road trip and was exhausted. I felt resentful that I was pushed to the side to make the documentary happen. It wasn’t the perfect mix. ____________________ I didn’t like SF, it was cold and windy and I didn’t feel like a row of colorful houses and switchback street were worth a day of vacation. I loved the warm sunshine of Napa and wished I could go back. We met some people for yet ANOTHER photo meetup and as usual, I was elected model. And this photo was snapped. The result was gorgeous, the lead up to it, not so much. ____________________ I guess the moral of the story is, instagram is an awesome place to view art, but keep in mind it’s what the artist wants you to see. Don’t get jealous. Know that sometimes, there was a lot of garbage just outside of the frame. ____________________ Also, here’s to another two show day roller coaster! ____________________ ✌
