Trim Castle, Co Meath It's the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, and was constructed over a thirty-year period by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter. Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by King Henry II in 1172 in an attempt to curb the expansionist policies of Richard de Clare, (Strongbow). Construction of the massive three storied Keep (shown in the picture), the central stronghold of the castle, was begun c. 1176 on the site of an earlier wooden fortress. This massive twenty-sided tower, which is cruciform in shape, was protected by a ditch, curtain wall and moat. Fun fact: Trim Castle features in a key battle scene in Mel Gibsons Braveheart. Newgrange, County Meath. This prehistoric monument was built over 5,200 years ago, making it older than Stonehenge and the Great Egyptian Pyramids. It is believed that it had a religious significance, as its entrance is aligned with the rising sun on the winter solstice, as light floods the inner chamber. Newgrange is the most famous neolithic monument of the Brú na Bóinne (Boyne Valley Tombs) , a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, which includes the nearby passage graves of Knowth and Dowth. It’s been a while since I posted a photo of cattle. This is a Holstein Friesian seen on grazing land at The Hill of Uisneach, an ancient ceremonial site in County Westmeath, Ireland. While it’s not the exact geographical centre of Ireland, in Irish mythology it’s considered to be the symbolic center of the land. Mercifully the rain stayed away that day, and we enjoyed a fantastic tour of sacred and ceremonial sites.
