Before Louie and Shannon were the Cows Come Home Garage Babies, there were Augie and Minnie Moo, both rejected by their mothers, just three weeks apart, in August 2018. After wintering in their “renovated” cow clubhouse in the barn, complete with a fort made of hay bales, Augie and Minnie were turned loose yesterday to enjoy green grass and a warm, sunny day in their transitional pasture! A huge THANK YOU to our awesome volunteers, who have been here since the beginning, who were here to finish fencing, hang gates, clean troughs, check all pasture fencing and share the moment the 9-month olds kicked up their heels and raced around their new playground. Once they’ve had time to visit with the herd and make some connections, have some friends over for some games of chase and head-butting, we’ll see how they do in the field. This magnificent boy is Kong. He was the last resident of Cows Come Home to wear an ear tag. #9, it read. I left his tag in so our volunteers and visitors could see him coming. I always urged people to give him his space, discouraging close contact. Then, one day, Justin Brown decided this guy deserved the same opportunity to be loved - to make a friend - and Kong agreed. His demeanor in general softened a bit with each visit from his new friend. Then came Spencer Tyler, who was immediately drawn to the big boy bearing the last ear tag. Spencer thought Kong might enjoy some companionship and serious chin scratches. Kong agreed. The former “service” bull- now-steer was no longer being passed by or his gaze unmet. And as his distrust of man and our notions of who he was began to slip away, so did that symbol of human ownership, the ear tag. It simply fell out. Ihr habt sie sicherlich schon in unserer Story gesehen, aber heute möchten wir euch diese hübsche Dame genauer vorstellen: Wilma. Eine manchmal etwas miesepetrige Dame, deren Herz man dennoch ganz schnell mit der Macht in Leckerchen erobern kann. Süße Bananen und saftige Möhren stehen hoch oben im Kurs und lassen sie ganz neugierig werden. Wilma wurde als Milchkuh auf dem Hof geboren, als er noch ein konventioneller Milchbetrieb und nicht Erika & Friends war. Sie hat aber im Gegensatz zu den meisten Kühen in der Milchindustrie nie gekalbt, ihr ist also das Trennungsleid als Mutter vom Kind nach der Geburt erspart geblieben. Mit viel Geduld lässt sie sich auf neue Menschen ein und lässt sich sogar anfassen und streicheln - natürlich aber nur, wenn es ihr gerade passt. Durch und durch eine Diva also..
