I love working with wildlife but I never take for granted opportunities to work with our domesticated pets!
Much of the time wild animals need to be sedated or anesthetized to do veterinary work as it’s too dangerous for us and them if they’re awake. This is rarely the case for cats & dogs and that means I get to know my patients much better and even have some fun with them!
This is also a good opportunity to remind all of us not to take the beauty of domestication for granted altogether!! What an incredible thing it is to have certain animal species that have been bred by people for millennia to love & function amongst us. Its these animals (like dogs, cats, etc) that readily offer people one of the most special things on our planet The Human:Animal Bond . Coincidentally, the “domestication” of cats is more of a passive one and for this reason our housecats have retained more of their “wild” abilities. For instance, you may notice that the behaviors and even playing & hunting habits of big cats (lions, leopards, tigers, jaguars, etc) is almost identical to those we see in our adorable little fluffy housecats! The only downside to that is that our pet cats ARE effective hunters and unfortunately they’re responsible for the death of millions of smaller wildlife animals every year (including millions of birds too). This is one of many reasons I say - PLEASE keep your cats indoors. It’s not fair to native wildlife and trust me - there’s a lot of unnecessary risks for outdoor cats too!

My two cats Willy and Blue are total #BFFs and I'm so thankful for that! They get along beautifully but not everyone living in multi-cat households can say the same... Cats can be easily stressed which can lead to disputes with one another as well as destructive behaviors like spraying (peeing outside the litter box) and scratching up furniture.
One pet-hack I use to reinforce my kitties general wellbeing and relationship with each other is @comfortzonepets pheromone diffusers. @comfortzonepets is pretty incredible technology and it diffuses synthetic pheromones to create feelings of comfort and happiness for all cats whether they're kittens or adults or male or female. These "happy" smells are essentially signals that make your cat feel more comfortable at home and can decrease negative behaviors like excessive fights or scratching.
FYI "pheromones" are chemical signals, or odors, that species emit and use to communicate amongst their own kind. They can be expressed in different ways and mean different things i.e. territorial, sexual, comforting, stressed, etc. Pheromones are a HUGE part of everyday life for wildlife and domesticated animals including anything from crocodiles to monkeys to cats. Utilizing them to our pet's benefits is just the tip of the iceberg in my opinion as I personally feel this technology will become a significant way we humans manage domesticated animals and wildlife in very positive ways.

I love my kitties more than anything and fortunately they're absolute best buds too!
I have @comfortzonepets to thank for that too because believe it or not "Blue" and "Willy" didn't get along at all when I first introduced them to each other. Initially there was hair-raising, hissing and growling, oh my.
Comfort Zone's diffusers release pheromone signals into the air to make our cats more comfortable and this can be especially beneficial for multi-cat households with cats that may not get along or are urinating inappropriately (aka outside of the litter box) or excessively clawing & scratching up furniture.
Here's 3 helpful tips for cat owners:
1. Provide adequate litter boxes by taking the number of cats you have and add +1 (i.e. 2 cats should have 3 boxes).
2. Offer at least 1 scratching post per cat but more is better.
3. Plug in @comfortzonepets pheromone diffusers, they legit help most households and I always have 2+ plugged in at all times .

Like all animals cats can express many forms of communication beyond vocalizations. Willy here is acknowledging me talking to him simply by dramatically swinging his tail every time I say his name. He’s happy to hear me speak to him and shows his content with his tail instead of anything else (such as head rubbing, kneading muffins, or rolling belly-up on/near me). FYI-this is one of my many Willy-voices and he knows that when I speak in this tone I’m directing that at him and not Henry, my dog, or Blue, my other cat; they each have other “dialects” and know when I’m speaking to them individually (like Henry’s baby voice teehee). Cat tails can communicate many emotions including “I’m excited to see you” (tail straight up and quivering), “I’m annoyed” (tail moving side-to-side, violently; and this can also mean “I want to play”), “I’m scared” (tail up and completely fluffed) and so on.
Translating what your cat is saying to you thru their tails will help you better communicate with your cat and further develops the human-animal bond you two share.
I hope everyone had a #HappyCaturday this weekend . #crazycatman #catperson #kitteh #dontworryHenry #youknowilovedogstoo #crazycatladiesarethexy #sometimes # #

I often get asked "why is my cat spraying outside the box?" (AKA 'inappropriate urination'). My answer is that it depends and there's several medical and behavioral explanations for this. I first recommend ruling out medical causes such as UTI's, kidney disease, diabetes, etc. and this can be accomplished with bloodwork and a urinalysis. Keep in mind other diseases can cause this such as arthritis and regardless, looking into other health issues requires consultation with your local vet.
Now if your cat is apparently physically healthy then I worry about behavioral issues and one of the most common causes of inappropriate urination is stress. Many cats can stress out easily and from stressors like a new pet, a new child, visitors, home improvement/construction, or even just the presence of another cat in the house.
Removing your cat's stressor(s) isn't always an option but there are effective ways to mitigate it! One of the easiest things you can do is plugging in @comfortzonepets Calming pheromone diffuser. Comfort Zone’s pheromone diffusers release analogs of a cat's natural "happy pheromones" (aka 'happy smells') and are proven effective in reducing undesirable cat behaviors.
If your cat is peeing outside the box, then DEF consult with your local vet and if you guys determine it's a behavioral issue then I'd recommend you try a comfort zone pheromone product. It really helps and makes everyone's lives easier . FYI excessively clawing on furniture is often another sign of stress and @comfortzonepets can help for that too !
