Today is the 4 year anniversary of Kalief Browder’s death (swipe <-------------) our criminal justice system failed him Lets never forget what this young man had to go through. He was wrongfully arrested for stealing a backpack.
Never forget how they sent him to an adult facility at 16. Never forget how his family couldn’t afford bail and therefore was sent to Rikers Island for 3 years without a trial Never forget how he was tortured in solitary confinement and spent 400 days in there Never forget how he was brutalized by the guards and inmates. Never forget how he suffered simply because he refused to plead to a crime he didn’t commit. Never forget that he committed suicide after his experience on Rikers left him depressed and with PTSD.
This story really touched me and there were days I could not stop thinking of him.
Theres so much about our justice system that needs to change.

Back in the early ‘80s, I went to see a famous psychologist named Albert Ellis about a traumatic mugging I had recently experienced. He advised me to teach kids in my neighborhood, similar to those who had attacked me. That resonated with me. ⠀
⠀
Soon, I started teaching basic math to 3 kids in my building: José , Janet, and Jesse. We had a great time and they taught me so much. I stayed in touch with Janet and José for years. Inch by inch, they climbed out of poverty: José worked as a restaurant manager and Janet was a teacher’s aide.⠀
⠀
My contact with Jesse was shorter-lived. He was a wonderful young man. Handsome and bilingual, he lived with his grandmother and translated for her.⠀
⠀
After one of our classes, he said to me, ‘Hey, Steve, what’s up?’⠀
⠀
‘Good. I’m fine.’⠀
⠀
‘You want to buy?’⠀
⠀
‘What?’ I asked him ‘Buy what?’⠀
⠀
‘Marijuana,’ he looked at me. ‘Weed.”⠀
⠀
‘No, I don’t smoke. Why are doing this?’⠀
⠀
‘To make money.’⠀
⠀
We started talking more about why he had dropped out of school and his future. He told me that he didn’t know how to do things like math, but I had seen him in class and he did know how to do math. ⠀
⠀
‘What about these?’ I asked him, as I jotted down some basic business scenarios that we hadn’t covered yet.⠀
⠀
‘Of course I can do baby math. I can make money.’⠀
⠀
‘Well, if they catch you selling marijuana, you’ll be in trouble,’ I reminded him.⠀
⠀
A month later, Jesse was arrested for assault. He was fighting another drug dealer in Tompkins Square Park, his grandmother recounted to me with the help of another neighbor. And then, three weeks later, Jesse was dead. He had been hit over the head with a chair by another inmate while on Rikers Island. That was the day that I decided I wanted to teach in prisons. ⠀

Representing my organization @_togetherletsrise today at the People Power Convention. My goal was to bring light to historical trauma in the black community, mass incarceration, and racial disparities in the criminal justice system. We will never solve the problem if we don’t start rehabilitating in prison and jails. #mentalhealth #criminaljusticereform #massincarceration #generationaltrauma #southlosangeles

I’m excited to announce Together Let’s Rise is partnering with the Challengers Boys and Girls Club in South LA to host a Back to School Drive for 200 of their summer camp kids that are affected by parental incarceration and at-risk for gangs.
There are only two clubs in South LA. It was important for me to give back to the area I was born and raised in until I was about 12 and my mom and her siblings were raised. We attended the same club along with many of their friends and mine. @_togetherletsrise
#WhenTheySeeUs It took four days to watch and process the mini series directed by #AvaDuvernay chronicling the #CentralParkFive case. The range of emotions ranged from pure anger, distress and sadness. Legit had me crying. There are too many lessons to take away from this. The journey these five boys endured while transitioning to men was captured brilliantly. Especially that of #KoreyWise , #JharellJerome did that! We don't need to say more than WATCH IT! #KevinRichardson #RaymondSantana #YusefSalaam #AntronMcCray #Justice #CriminalJusticeReform #DontSayPodcast #podcast #blackpodcast #blackpodcasters #Netflix
