Calm before the cold. We got this shot as a boat was coming in on Tangier Sound. The land beyond is called Janes Island State Park that actually has some golden beaches along the shore line. You also can take a ferry ride to Smith Island. Smith Island that lies approximately 10 miles west of Crisfield, Md across the Tangier Sound portion of the Chesapeake Bay. The island consists of three communities, Ewell, Tylerton and Rhodes Point, which all sit on the Maryland portion of the island. The Virginia portion is currently uninhabited, although once contained many homes of early settlers. This shot is from a wonderful Condo that’s for sale that is listed at $199,000. Bank of Crisfield 1900-1910 Photo by Christina Vitabile --------------------------- Driving down Main Street through Crisfield to the docks (now a scenic municipal pier and entertainment area) where the town ends and the Chesapeake Bay begins, it's hard to believe that almost the entire western commercial section of the town is built upon the remains of the oyster industry - quite literally. Oyster shells - innumerable tons of them - are the bedrock upon which the more substantial buildings in town are sited, deposited there during the heyday of the oyster harvesting industry from the 1880s to the 1920s, earning Crisfield the title of "Seafood Capital of the World". Most important, and arguably the most beautiful of these is the former Bank of Crisfield (1900-1910).
