“Bully the bar, don’t let the bar bully you.”
.
During my time as a coach and an athlete, two traits that I have found to be important for success in weightlifting are AGGRESSIVENESS and CONFIDENCE.
.
These traits take time to develop, but their growth can be encouraged with the right mentality.
.
My perspective that I’ve used and shared with my athletes is to “bully the bar.” I don’t mean to muscle the bar without any technique, but to move that bar like you own it.
.
This phrase may help you or your athletes understand the importance of aggression and confidence.

“Space is weakness”
.
When?
Identifying a strong position for both gymnastics and weightlifting
.
What does the mean?
Optimal positioning for ring support includes keeping the hands close to the hips.
Space between the rings and the body indicates a weaker, less efficient position.
.
Optimal position in weightlifting, specifically deadlift, snatch, and clean includes keeping the bar close to the body.
Space between the bar and the body indicates a weaker, less efficient position.

“Gymnastics is shapes”
.
“Shapes, such as the arch and hollow, in gymnastics create tension and tension creates power.

When you have power it makes movement patterns more efficient.” - Pamela Gagnon @pamelagnon

“Three components for every Olympic lift”
.
When coaching an athlete through Olympic lifts, identifying the specific source of an error within the flurry of movement can often be a challenge.
.
When this happens, dissect the lift into its three simple components:
- STANCE (narrow, wide, pulling, landing, etc)
- GRIP (narrow, wide, hook, etc.)
- POSITION (shoulders over bar, triple extension, internal/external rotation, etc.)
.
Next, identify the most glaring error, find the fix, then move on to the next.
.

“Front rack clock face” - adapted from @torokhtiy
.
When?
Describing elbow positioning in front rack
.
What does this mean?
Referencing the hours on a clock face to the position of the elbows may provide you with a more precise description for the athlete.
.
For example:
Press - Elbows at 5 o’clock position
Jerk - Elbows at 4 o’clock position
Front squat - Elbows at 3 o’clock position
.

“The king of all exercise - the clean”
.
“The ‘king of all exercises’ contains two classic exercises, the deadlift and the squat, and is itself a component of another classic, the clean and jerk. .
This classic of strength and power demands as much speed, flexibility, coordination, balance, accuracy, as any sport and at higher reps is a better cardiovascular stimulus than bicycling.
.
The clean, both an end and a means, marks the point where weight training becomes sport. As hard to master as the violin, every minute of practicing and training for this move is a minute well spent.”

.
I like this quote because it speaks the basic truth about what CrossFit is to me, especially the essence of a fun (and supportive) #community.
.
Coach Glassman spoke these words about CrossFit back 2005 (see WOD Sunday 051113 on the main site). At this point in time there were 13 affiliates total. Thirteen.
.
The current affiliate count is more than 1,000 times that (13,000) in over 120 countries.
.
It’s safe to say that many others agree the
- movements (functional),
- programming (constantly varied),
- explanation (coaching),
- and community (millions worldwide)
have been key factors in the success of CrossFit.
