I have been seriously wishing for a cardboard palm for a very long time. Now I’ve found it and I’m so happy!! They call it a palm but it’s actually a cycad. I even had to buy a very expensive pot for it . I won’t tell you the price but it’s my most expensive pot so far . Haha us flower crazy people . No regrets - I’m happy #cardboardpalm#cycad#alicesgardentz#palmtrees#rarepalms#gardening#pottedplants
Dioon plants @sprouthomechicago. Dioon are a genus of the cycad family and grow in tropical forests, dry hillsides, canyons and coastal dunes. These are slow growing plants with stiff, upright, narrow leaflets along tall stems. Stop by and check out these prehistoric plants! #cycad #dioon #prehistoric #dioecious #plants #houseplants #rareplants #chicago #plantshop #sprouthomechicago
last time i posted a pic of dioon edule was about a year ago (#jmdioonedule) - that’s how long it took to grow a new leaf i heard these guys are slow growers, so i wasn’t surprised... but still ♀️
〰️ did you know?
• cycads have been around since the dinosaur age
• dioon edule can live beyond 2,000 years (vovides, 1990)
• sadly, this plant is considered ‘near threatened,’ primarily due to habitat destruction by humans (vovides, 2008)
• another factor is the use of herbicides for land clearing that replaced traditional methods such as slash or burn clearing (vovides, 2008)
• researchers & local farmers are working to conserve & cultivate this plant
