Tips on tap backs and push ups out of the saddle...
.
✖️TAP BACKS✖️in this move the hips go straight back, in a controlled movement, and “tap” the saddle. Whether you actually make contact with the saddle or not, the movement is still the same. Abs are engaged, chest is elevated, and there is a light grip on the bars. The arms will go into extension when moving into the tap, however they should never hyperextend. When tapping your hips back, go into the range of motion that feels right for YOUR body.
.
✖️PUSH UPS✖️in this move you press into your bars with the palms of your hands. Elbows can go out wide, OR can stay in tight to you core - depending on the cue from your instructor OR the health of your shoulder joint. If you have a shoulder injury, I recommend keeping your elbows in on your push ups because taking the elbows out wide can place more stress on the shoulder joint. When dropping into the push up, maintain a straight back, lead with your chest down towards the bars, and press into your palms to activate the upper body. IMPORTANT TIP ➡️ if the hips are too far back, it’s harder to engage the upper body... so for optimal activation, bring the hips in front of the saddle when you drop into your push ups. This will allow you to put more weight into the movement. The farther back your hips are, the harder it is to activate the upper body.

Lets chat about power jumps with push ups in the saddle!
.
Power jumps are when you increase your riders pace to a double time beat (the quicker “sprint” pace) and then cue them to rise and lower for a specific count. In this video I add push ups in the saddle as a way to increase intensity in the drill. Here are some tips to properly power jump...
.
Start in the saddle - build the riders pace up the double time beat. Make sure to tell riders that they should be able to maintain this quick beat before attempting to rise and lower with it. If they can’t, they should stay in the saddle and push their body to build THAT strength and endurance before attempting a power jump.
.
Tell your riders exactly what’s going to happen. For example, for this song in this video, I would tell my riders “we are going to ride out of the saddle for a count of 8, then we will lower into the saddle for 4 push ups.. we will repeat this pattern for a total of 30 seconds.” This mentally and physically allows them to prepare for the drill.
.
Protect your riders by giving them body cues. Throughout this drill it’s important to maintain a strong core. The back should stay straight and the rider should focus on maintaining strong body control.
.
Give your riders the option to modify. Here are some great modifications ➡️ Rise and lower but remove the push ups ➡️ or for a rider who does not feel comfortable rising up at a quick beat, they can just stay in the saddle and do push ups OR practice just holding the beat seated. I know giving multiple options to your riders can feel overwhelming to explain, BUT it’s SO important that riders of ALL levels know that they can participate in a drill at THEIR own level.
.
This drill is intense so be a positive motivator and keep your riders going with your energy ❤️..... we are here to help each other grow.... so please don’t be afraid to ask QUESTIONS... Leave them in the comments and we can chat! #soundridecycling

Form on the bike should never be undervalued! Full body indoor cycling has a reputation for throwing cycling mechanics out the door, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Yes there are instructors out there who don’t emphasize the importance of form, but that goes for ANY fitness medium. When teaching choreographed riding... yes the choreography is important, BUT form superacids it!
.
✖️INSTRUCTORS✖️ TAKE THE TIME to explain proper form to your riders. Provide modifications. Remind them that proper form on the bike is what keeps them healthy in the long run!
.
✖️RIDERS✖️take ownership of your ride and make a conscious effort to dial in your form on the bike. Your body will thank you!
