Came across this cool clip of @kumar.rocker pitching for @vandyboys . Notice how exceptionally quick he works. So far in the 2019 MLB Season, Wade Milley has the quickest pace at an average of 19.8 seconds between pitches. Blake Treinen has the slowest pace at 29.8 seconds (only 30 IP). And the MLB average is 24.4 seconds. There is nothing to suggest that going quicker or slower has a grand scale impact (ie. going quick won’t automatically improve every pitcher). While it is probably impossible to sustain the pace that Rocker has in this clip, I have a few personal thoughts on why a quicker tempo might be advantageous for pitchers. 1️⃣: “Thinking only hurts the Ball club meat.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Awesome quote from Bull Durham. Here’s my thought: if you take more time in between pitches the more likely an inexperienced pitcher will start to doubt himself - and start trapping himself with negative thoughts. By going as quick as Rocker here, you are literally grabbing the ball and going right into your motion - no time to think. Just throw. 2️⃣: Hitters hate it. If you have watched Marcus Stroman Pitch you can see just how annoyed hitters get when their rhythm and tempo is thrown off. You control the pace of the game as a pitcher - use that to your advantage!
