Do this exercise at the barrier, you should always have at least one hand on the barrier for safety. The fall we want to avoid it backwards So make sure you stand tall and keep you weight slightly forward at all times. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
Keep your legs straight throughout and stand on your toe picks. Make sure you always take small steps, keeping the heal lifted as much as possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
There are four different directions of step:
• Forwards
• Sideways left foot lead
• Sideways right foot lead
• Backwards
Make sure you do at least 10m of toe steps with each direction (I usually ask my skaters to walk the full length of the rink).

When we jump we bend and rise, so we need to reinforce this movement more within our exercises. This exercise has been tweaked to specifically to help encourage this action. To begin with skate this exercise on a hockey circle.

Start with a right back outside three turn, with the weight through the right shoulder and hip. Extend the free-leg and arms so they are directly above the circle you’re skating on.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s the important part, make sure bend and press the heal of the skating foot into the circle. Rise up to release the three turn. Make sure you stay up in knee after the turn and fully extend the free-leg in front.

It’s very important not to pull the turn with the left shoulder, this disconnects the hips and shoulder The turn is initiated by the press and release of the skating foot, then the right shoulder driving through.
Now do a tidy right forward inside open mohawk, extending the free-legs to build more strength. You can now push on the right foot again to repeat the exercise. Do this exercise in both directions.

This exercise looks relatively simple on the surface, but it’s how it’s executed that is important. You MUST be sharp and efficient with your movements, staying tall and tight.

Enter backwards and press to the right with the arms and shoulders (left for clockwise jumpers). Stand tall then enter a right back outside twizzle. Initiate the rotation from the ankle and NOT by pulling the shoulders around. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stay tall tight and right throughout crossing the free-leg (stay left for clockwise jumpers). After 2-4 complete rotations exit with a single loop jump. Do this jump by springing from the ankle and not by pulling the arms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t forget to stretch hold and press your landing position. A jump sold by the landing so don’t be lazy (yes I went there ).

Watch the demonstration of the double flip and note the alignment of the hips and shoulders. They remain connected throughout the takeoff draw and pre-rotate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At the barrier walk through the flip entry and make sure you place your takeoff foot inline with the same hip as the foot (E.g. Right foot right hip). Also, keep the skating foot inline with the same hip as foot (E.g. Left foot left hip). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now draw the foot away in a straight line as far as you can go without leaning forward, then draw it back inline with the takeoff foot. Repeat this twice. To finish, draw past the takeoff foot underneath the same hip as drawing foot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Make sure the edge of the drawing foot is on a flat backward inside edge. Finish the exercise by doing a baby single flip. You should use the inside hand for assistance on the barrier. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Once you feel comfortable doing the double draw walk through, do a regular single flip at the barrier. Stay as close to the wall as possible without hitting it This helps keep the jump tall and narrow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

TIP OF THE DAY: Are you guilty of neglecting your less dominate side of your crossovers? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If the answer is, “YES! Guilty as charged…”, then you better get on top of these basics ASAP. Here’s how: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Begin with nice big Pumps with your arms up on top of the circle. Make sure to bend your knees and utilize your inside edge as a tool to help you gain more speed. Pull your feet and your inner thighs together to gain maximum power. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Next, go right into Chasses, which is a push + glide + push sequence. As you can see, @leslietsaii starts by gliding on two feet then she strokes onto the outside edge of the right foot and extends her left freeleg. Then she brings her left foot to meet the skating foot and she transfers her weight to lift her right knee up and repeats the stroke. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Lastly, transition directly into the crossovers by applying all the characteristics of the knee bend, power, and weight transfers of the Pumps and Chasses.
