Yesterday I took a small water sample from a steam near my university, and in this sample, I found my first simocephalus commonly known as a water flea! These tiny crustaceans can grow up to 5 mm but this one was only about 2.5 mm. These crusteaceans live in many types of freshwater environments like streams, swamps and lakes. The animals are filter feeders, and if you look closely you can see that it sucks in water and particles. Another amazing thing about these small animals is that you can see their beating hearts in their back, through the transparent shell. If you look even closer, you can see tiny single celled organisms attached to the shell on the front and close to the eye. These are voticellas, but we will look at them another time! #coupdoeil : les daphnies, petits crustacés mesurant de un à quatre millimètres, vivent dans les points d’eau douce stagnante (étangs, lacs, mares plutôt en milieu forestier ou boisé, en présence de feuilles mortes sur le fond). Plusieurs centaines d'espèce de daphnies ont colonisé de nombreux types de milieux. Elles cohabitent souvent avec les cyclops et divers copépodes et des larves de chironomidés qui avec elles constituent l'essentiel du zooplancton des eaux douces tempérées. 1. Daphnia hyalina juvénile nageant à l'aide de ses antennes bi-ramées. L'intestin est rempli de phytoplancton en cours de digestion. 2. Zooplancton. Colonie de Conochilus unicornis, rotifère, avec phytoplancton symbiotique, Chlamydomonas chlorophycees. 3. Cladocere. Daphnia hyalina, femelle ovigène. 4. Leptodora kindtii. La transparence remarquable du corps permet d'observer l'œil composé, le système nerveux central et les nerfs reliés aux petites antennules de cette femelle. 5. Cladocere.
