Happy birthday to the #BrooklynBridge, which is 136 today! ⠀ ⠀ .⠀ On May 24, 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge officially opened to traffic. The massive celebration brought more than 50,000 people to the bridge. Some of the distinguished guests included President Chester A. Arthur, New York Governor Grover Cleveland, and Emily Roebling, the wife of the bridge’s main engineer, Washington Roebling (who was herself responsible for completing the project when her husband became bedridden with caisson disease). Cannon fire, live bands, and a fireworks display marked the festive occasion. The New York Times wrote: "The opening of the bridge was decidedly Brooklyn’s celebration. #OnThisDay in 1870 construction on the Brooklyn Bridge began! (photos via @museumofcityny and #averylibrary) ⠀ .⠀ Completed 13 years later at the cost $15 million, the Brooklyn Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world (until 1903 when 4.5 more feet gave the Williamsburg Bridge the title). Its original engineer John Roebling died a few months before construction began following an accident that crushed his foot and led to fatal gangrene and tetanus. His son Washington A. Roebling who took over the project became incapacitated by decompression illness, also known as the bends or caisson disease, in the summer of 1872. The final ten years of work were overseen by Washington's wife Emily Warren Roebling. She later wrote "I have more brains, common sense and know-how generally than have any two engineers, civil or uncivil, and but for me the Brooklyn Bridge would never have had the name Roebling in any way connected with it!”⠀ .⠀ Swipe to see the bridge during construction! ++️= a dramatic NYC disaster. #OnThisDay in 1912, the freezing cold and high winds made the Equitable Life Building fire particularly dangerous. (photo via @museumofcityny)⠀ .⠀ A fire broke out before dawn on January 9, 1912 at the Equitable Life Building at 120 Broadway, spreading to an eighth floor kitchen via a dumbwaiter and eventually engulfing the entire structure. The ten-story skyscraper had been the headquarters of the Equitable Life Assurance Society since 1870, and was purportedly fire-proof.⠀ .⠀ However, weather conditions rendered firefighting efforts ineffective: freezing temperatures and gusts measured at 68 miles per hour reduced spray from fire hoses to droplets, eventually encasing the building’s facade in ice formations while the interior structure continued to burn. Six people were killed including the Battalion Fire Chief William Walsh. In both this disaster and the Triangle Fire, a year earlier, the ladders were too short to reach the upper floors. These events highlighted the need for new safety regulations in a rapidly growing city.⠀ .⠀ The ice made the fire-damaged building something of a local attraction. As the New York Times reported: “[the ice] settled over the building in a gleaming sheath of white that made the fire a wonderful thing to see. Ice converted the ruined building into a fantastic palace, with the rainbows arching at every turn as the sunlight filtered through the spray and smoke.”⠀ .⠀ The building was unsalvageable and what remained of its facade was eventually razed.
