Dmitry Markov is a photographer breaking expectations of the ‘traditional’ artist’s career trajectory. His pictures of the ’real’ Russia, unseen by outsiders, are exclusively shot on iPhone and first attracted notice on Markov’s Instagram @dcim.ru
The Pushkino native came to photography late in life following stints as a journalist, social worker and volunteering with disabled children. Since a 2015 project capturing daily life in Pskov, his photographs have garnered praise for their gritty, realistic beauty, as well as criticism for a ‘bleak’ depiction of Russian life outside the two major cities.

Markov describes this tension in his own words: “They are not just ‘social photographs’… they are my personal encounters and scenes […] And when I get asked why I go after ‘life’s unpleasant side’, I reply, ‘because I am part of it.’” His debut book, #draft, was published in 2018, and #DRAFT #RUSSIA, an exhibition of 60 of Markov’s works, will show at Agnès B. Galerie, New York until 4 June @agnesb_officiel
