‘When you read, don’t consider only what the author thinks, but take time to consider what YOU think. You must strive to find your own voice, boys, and the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all.’ — Dead Poets Society.
I have been putting off buying the book based on one of my favourite movies for many reasons, mainly that books based on movies often seem to be merely a poor man’s imitation. I hoped it’d be a quick read that would maybe add some more detail and insights into the story I love so much, but Kleinbaum has taken the dialogue for the film and rushed through everything that isn’t verbally expressed. Maybe if the content of the book wasn’t entirely about literature and free thinking, this wouldn’t bother me so much. Scenes where the characters are clearly (in the movie) conflicted and internally battling with themselves, are so simplified that it seems like the author was transcribing the plot of the film as she watched it.
In the book, Keating teaches a class where he sets a test whilst putting on the board pictures of attractive women bending over and in lingerie, teaching the boys about how hard it will be for them to concentrate at college with female students around them. And whilst I’m ranting about subtle misogyny, where Knox is already borderline stalkerish in the way he disrespects Chris’ boundaries in the movie, in the book he becomes outright predatory, groping her breasts at a party knowing that she thinks it is her boyfriend doing so.
My conclusion is basically that Weir’s movie is a masterpiece, and for me this book adds nothing worthwhile to it.
Un sogno che si realizza
