ASL SHOULD BE APPRECIATED, NOT APPROPRIATED - In this post, I’ve included some slides that explain what cultural appropriation is along with what appropriation vs appreciation of ASL looks like. My challenge to you as you read this information is to reflect on the ways in which you may have contributed to the cultural appropriation of sign language. What changes can you make to begin appreciating ASL as opposed to appropriating it? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ll admit that I, myself, have bought products and apparel (tees, fonts, mugs, etc.) with ASL on them from companies and individuals who are not part of the Deaf community. It wasn’t until I realized what I was contributing to that I decided to make a change. It’s one of the main reasons I started @languagepriority. To give people a place to go to when they want to find t-shirts featuring ASL instead of contributing to the cultural appropriation that is so prevalent in our society. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ••••• LOTS OF QUESTIONS ABOUT BABY SIGN LANGUAGE — I’ll be doing a future post on this to clarify. However, I will say I am talking about Baby Sign as an industry that the hearing majority has taken over to make profits with no input from the Deaf community. I’m NOT referring to hearing children with language delays or other disabilities using ASL to communicate. That is obviously encouraged!
