So this is something I’ve never done. A client wanted three original drawings of the same house to give as gifts, rather than prints from the same drawing. So I have three unique drawings with basically the same composition but all the lines and measurements are slightly different. I merged the layers in photoshop to get the really cool dense image you see in the first slide. Scroll to see the originals. Thought it would be a good time to return to St Mark’s Coffeehouse on 17th in Denver. Did this in a big Kunst & Papier sketchbook I got years ago that didn’t appreciate my attempts at ink wash, so a chunk of time was spent waiting for areas to dry to be able to repair some damage and buckling. Creatives, real quick — let's talk about donated services. I was recently asked to donate my time and skills to an amazing local non-profit (which wasn't made clear at the start of our exchange.. but that's a whole other conversation). . As I toured their facilities and learned about the soul of their organization, my heart leapt at the chance to lend support. But while driving home, something felt unsettled, recalling how little money I made last month, an unpaid credit card I really need to handle, student loans, potential clients I need to find... and the overwhelm crept in. Then I thought, what if I say no? And I swear a whole lush field of relief and space opened up in my chest. It's okay to say no. It's okay to prioritize your well-being. ☝️ You've gotta be sustained before you can give in certain ways, and there are other types of support you can provide (donate a % of sales; volunteer; share the cause, etc). . Please try to refuse the guilt that comes with saying no. You're not selfish. You're not a bad person. You deserve to feel supported and well, too. So please always always take care of yourself. AND never let a for-profit company take advantage of you being an independent artist by saying they’ll compensate you with exposure. Your talent IS worth the $. For real.
