I cannot tell since when but I am sensitive to strong scents.
So fragrant flowers, weddings with flower decor or any place with scented freshners they are all frustrating experiences. My face feels like it’s burning and I can get a mild to severe headache depending on how long I inhaled that scent.
So you would understand how it would be like if a candle enthusiast like me mistakenly purchases one of those scented ones. Now I always loved purchasing candles especially those which have a neat packaging. Unwrapping them is just oddly satisfying. And then suddenly there was this trend of scented candles and the non scented ones seem to get rarer by the day. You might think I am being dramatic but sometimes the scent is just so overwhelming!
Pretty packaging is great and all but if the packaging cannot convey if the candle is scented or not I cannot decide if I would buy it because I would dare not try and take a whiff of that scent.
Whenever I do buy one, I secretly thank those designers who clearly showed what kind of candle I am buying. If it takes me too long to figure out the type of candle I am buying its already too late for me. I begin to feel that tingling burning feeling all over my face.
It’s such a simple detail yet it makes a huge difference in my entire experience with that brand.
As the great master Paul Rand said “ Design is the silent ambassador of your brand "
Because this is what design is all about. It’s not just about aesthetics. For a design to be successful it needs to do its job well.
And in the grand scheme of things the logo is just the beginning.

Even though OEN’s main connection is craft, I’m actually surprised at how inspired this project is by industrial design. Many might see this as a contradiction considering the love-hate relationship that exists between the different communities.
I suppose the foundations are the Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design, both of which were quite revolutionary in how they integrated crafts in to their teachings. It’s questioning the relationship between usefulness and beauty, whether or not a single proper form could exist, had such a powerful effect on me.
Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa is a creative that sits alongside Dieter Rams and Jasper Morrison in terms of aesthetic. Not a bad thing, just something you wouldn’t necessarily associate with handcrafted goods. Philosophy though is something else, and his work for Muji is certainly something that would inspire anyone who is making functional goods. I hope you will check out his work and really study some of the nuances.
For now I will leave you with this quote, some advice people often forget. "Minimalism is about creating complete harmony and not about making simple.” - Naoto Fukasawa.
