I read this quote online, and it really resonated with me. Everything I’ve ever wanted in life was not unreasonable. The relationships I so deeply craved in every corner of my soul were not inaccessible. ⠀ When I was very young, I often tried to open up and was shut down, my words twisted. I wish I could've learned then that fear did not come part-and-parcel with love. But, I’ve always loved cautiously. I still tend to fear. My sweet, young, loving heart – wired for connection – and yet, at every step, I was played, and disconnected… No wonder I felt the way I did. I never stopped wanting more, seeking more, looking for what I never had... but my pursuit only broke me down and taught me to continue to fear. ⠀ On the other side of fear is love, joy, and trust. TRUST. Trust is what is on the other side. Trust not only in myself, but in others. And this is my work... Trust that I am enough, just the way I am. Trust that I can be loved. Trust that disagreement does not mean retaliation. Trust that I am good. Trust that I am light. Trust that I am still that perfect, sweet, little girl with nothing but love in her heart. I was never asking for too much. My need to be loved the way that I deserved was not unreasonable. I was just asking the wrong person. ⠀ And that's okay. You don't know what you don't know. I know better now.

I don't know who originally wrote this quote, but I hear it all the time — that you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. Can we quit perpetuating this thought? I don't doubt my love for others, but it's taken me a long time to approach the idea of loving my authentic self, because I grew up thinking I would never be good enough... So, I'm not completely there yet. However, I believe that it is THROUGH the act of loving others who are living authentically, that we learn to love who we really are. I'm grateful for those who live a life of truth and love me with no judgment, who can see me for who I really am and teach me how to see that in myself. I am eternally grateful for their love and friendship and care, grateful for them for modeling the way life should be lived.

Despite it’s prevalence, very few health care professionals understand complex post traumatic stress disorder. Unlike ptsd, the symptoms are less cut and dried and it cannot be traced back to a single definable incident. Complex ptsd is the result of repeated and prolonged exposure to interpersonal trauma wherein an individual feels helpless and trapped. ⚡️ The reality is that as children we are dependant on our caregivers and don’t have a means of escape if our caregivers are the ones inflicting the violence. This is also true if it is another family member, teacher or family friend is inflicting the abuse and we don’t feel as though we can tell anyone. This includes younger family members such as siblings or cousins, or even friends and peers. ⚡️ For a child, violence and ensuing feelings of helplessness do not have to fit into tidy categories like overt and extreme physical, emotional or sexual abuse. It can be more subtle and insidious, which can make it harder to name or pin point. It could be a parent who is struggling with symptoms of c-ptsd and aren’t able to parent in a way that always a child to feel safe and seen. It could be a child that is constantly bullying their sibling and a parent who does not acknowledge or step in to stop the abuse. It could be growing up in a household where your family members make homophobic comments and you are gay and maybe you also live in a small town with few support and resources. It could be dealing with ongoing racism in your community. ⚡️ The reality is that there are a multitude of different iterations and also symptoms. Because there are so many variables involved and noticing and attending to complex trauma requires an understanding of attachment and the nervous system, very few health care professionals have had the training to recognize c-ptsd or refer folks to practitioners who can work with it. Rather than addressing the c-ptsd, a doctor (or even therapist who isn’t knowledgeable about trauma) may attempt to treat the symptoms that are showing up rather than attending to the root cause. @andrea_papin_counselling

The concept of psychological trauma is so challenging to define - and it gets even more challenging when it comes to complex trauma. Complex traumas go beyond the symptoms of intrusion, hyperarousal, and construction that we see in other types of stress disorders. It compromises development, spiritual paradigms, and worldviews of the individuals impacted. • Do you see complex trauma in your work? If so, what are your approaches? Repost @yallaroza • • • • • • "For some of us, our ideas of love and intimacy — whether they be romantic, platonic or for ourselves — are bound up with our experiences of abandonment and violence. We rarely knew a love that stayed. Or, the safe and stable kind. The tender, forgiving kind. The ask-you-what-you-need kind. The maya-angelou-liberation kind. Or the bell hooks kind, where your love —simply by existing — makes systems shake at their knees, and crumble. And so, even the potential of love — when we’re dating, engaging in self-love practices or deepening friendships — can be a complicated space. We find ourselves always in conversation with ghosts from our past relationships and selves, from our childhood and from our parents/caregivers, from the future-us we fear becoming. Ghosts that tell us we’re unworthy, undeserving and perpetually not enough. . . . So, for anyone who needs to hear this: Your complicated feelings are valid. You are learning to dream up worlds you’ve never known. Relationships you’ve never had. Love(s) you’ve never felt. Things that take time. And you so, so deserve it." • • • • • • #Connection #Community #Relationship #Support #Companionship #Love #Trauma #ComplexTrauma #PTSD #PTSDAwareness #ComplexPTSD #CPTSD #Abuse #DomesticAbuse #DomesticViolence #ViolenceAgainstWomen #Violence #SexualAbuse #SexualViolence #SexualAssault #EmotionalAbuse #Gaslighting #EmotionalViolence #Neglect #EmotionalNeglect #ChildAbuse #ChildSexualAbuse #DevelopmentalTrauma
