I’ve dealt with food sensitivities since I was about 13. My dad self diagnosed himself and then my sister and I with several. .

What we found is that it seemed to be more of a reaction to the rennet in the cheese that caused our reactions. We didn’t seem to have a reaction to dairy itself and rennet less cheese didn’t cause us to have a reaction.

Then in 2013 I got diagnosed with celiac disease and a whole host of food allergies. One of them was dairy but it was the proteins whey and casein that caused problems within my immune system.

Now when I go out to eat and tell the server I have a dairy allergy I’m sometimes met back with, “it’s ok, that’s lactose free”.

Lactose is the sugar in dairy and often times people have problems with it because they don’t have enough of the lactase enzyme to help break down that particular sugar. Many people are very familiar with lactose intolerance.

I find people are less aware that a dairy allergy/intolerance/sensitivity can also be caused by the proteins whey and casein. You can find whey and casein in many processed foods in addition to the obvious cheese, yogurt and milk.

DAIRY ALLERGY | I discovered Hafsah had a dairy allergy when we first started weaning onto solids. The doctors said she’d developed mild eczema which would flare up each time she had dairy, so I cut dairy out off her diet. And replaced it with dairy free alternatives, like the almond milk, dairy free cheese and yoghurts.

For the past few months, she’s been really aggressive whenever we eat anything, so if it has dairy in it and we say no she’ll have a tantrum .

I read about building tolerance, so we let her have little bits of our food if it had dairy in it. I’m happy to say, her body seems to have built tolerance to dairy because she know has normal yoghurt and cheese without her eczema flaring up. She has a little patch on her arm, which is healing alhamdullilah!
