I think I can, I think I can... Meet Patachin, the little engine that could, and is. After being hit by a car in Ensenada, he became paralyzed in his back legs, losing his ability to get around. The accident also caused incontinence and loss of all control of potty habits. Our friend and TAP volunteer @suzy_smithson has been fostering him for the past week, and oh, the progress he’s made! First thing Suzy did was fit him for a wheelchair, but Patachin wants to walk like a “normal” dog— you can feel his fight. Even though he’s the cutest thing we have ever seen zipping around on 2 wheels, if there is any chance of him walking normally again, he’s going to get it. Patachin saw our vet, and he has a broken back. Vet says it's a miracle he is as mobile as he is, and surgery is not an option. His back has healed crooked and his spinal cord is compressed. The good news? The injury should not get any worse than it is now, and therapy to build his legs WILL increase his mobility! His daily walks and swimming have already been working wonders! Suzy has him on a strict diet and routine to help with the incontinence, and while he may always have urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence will improve as he gains muscle strength. Every day, we see strides from this little man with his positive attitude and will to live. He doesn’t know he’s not like all the other dogs, and we want it to stay that way. If anything, his differences make us love and appreciate him more. This guy is going places (literally) and we will be there to support him every step of the way. Go, Patachin, go!

After 8 years of hearing the cries in the middle of the night to be helped turn, roll over, help scratch an itch, massage legs, pull covers back on, that it would somehow just become a normal on a mamas heart... 8 years... Last night I was awoken from not cries but a loud scary shrieking.. I fly out of the bed to find Brookie on the opposite side of the bed, scared bc she was confused where she was and also cold bc the covers fell off her. I hold her tightly, wiping the tears away... saying mama is here and your ok. I pick her back up, put the covers back on, and let her fall back asleep with me slowly giving chills to her sweet beautiful face. 8 years My heart just won’t ever let this be my normal.
