One of the many reasons why families choose the Durham Region to call home
is the abundance of activities available to children, including almost every
sport imaginable. Being involved in such things as sports not only provides
children with an opportunity for physical health (obesity is emerging as a
major concern for our youth), but it also instills the confidence and skills
needed for their emotional health as well. But what happens to children who
cannot afford to enroll in sports?
Former professional athlete Randy Gill started Their Opportunity
to tackle that exact issue. The
organization strives to provide financial means for low income families to
allow their children to participate in local sports. Upon receiving
'sponsorship', children are then asked to 'pay it forward' through community
service, helping to not only instill core values and dedication, but
ultimately, to build stronger communities.
Their Opportunity holds several fundraising events throughout the year and
one in particular, Dimes 4 Time, is one that the Ferris Brothers
and RE/MAX Inc., Brokerage are proud
supporters of. Students from Grades 3-8 have been collecting change since
the campaign began on January the 8th. On March 29, 2018, Dimes 4 Times,
presented by RE/MAX Jazz Inc., Brokerage, will be holding an assembly at the
Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex Field House to help celebrate all of the
efforts made by the students this year. We are super excited to see how much
money the students have raised in support of helping those less fortunate be
able to play sports right here in the Durham Region.
