AFRICAN DRUMS (DJEMBE)
I love musical instruments and I wish I could play a sophisticated one, but a simple musical instrument like an African drum doesn’t require any special skill to produce sound to your own specification. Although a skillful drummer could play it in such a way that would make it sound sophisticated.
I could recall a certain time when I watched an African woman probably in her forties playing an African drum with so much energy that I really thought she was really high on some drug or even possessed with a spiritual influence. But no, that wasn’t the case. She is actually ambidextrous with both hands. The hilarious part of the show she displayed was when she began to extend the use of her hands down to her elbows. “Ah!” I thought the drum would blow into smithereens if cares not taken. Haha.
For me, all I know to do with an African drum is to beat it with my two hands with gentility, not like that crazed woman! Hahaha. But on the contrary, she deserves an accolade for her skills.
An African drum is handcrafted with the stretched skin (or hides) of an animal over a hollow cylindrical object. Spiritism is intrinsic in Africanity and you cannot alienate it from Afrocentrism. I do think that in some cases, African traditionalists could use it as a medium to summon spirits when they need to contact the supernatural realm.
In my church where I worship, there are two kinds of drum sets. An electronic drum set and an African drum set at two opposite ends of the podium. We currently lack a crazed African drummer like the woman I earlier mentioned but don't suggest I play the drums, haha... because I would rather sing with a microphone or play the keyboard which I am yet to learn.
