DNA day Día del ADN. 25/04/1953 . . . Today’s post is a very special one. A special friend, @ottislayne , will tell us about his experience back in 1962 when he was lectured by Francis Crick himself . . “National DNA Day brought back recollections of long ago. I was an 18 year-old Freshman at Harvard. I had come out of a rural high school in a farming area of Ohio, and I had no idea the quality of educational opportunities that awaited me. . . I registered for a survey of biology course and I was awestruck when, just three weeks into the semester our lecturer was James Watson, who, along with Francis Crick, had just won the Nobel Prize for his elucidation of the structure of DNA. He continued his lectures for two weeks, sharing his experiences in the work on DNA as he talked about genetics and molecular biology. At the time none of us knew how he had pulled on the research of Rosalind Franklin (many say “stole” it) and he did not mention her or her work. It was years before I heard that part of the story. . . I recall sitting through his lectures, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (6 in all). I recall being distracted from what he was saying because he had exaggerated facial expressions, wincing and frowning as he spoke. I had to look away to follow him. Years later, in medical school I learned that facial tics are often associated with compulsive behaviors. Looking back to his facial tics I suspect his compulsive work habits served him well in getting everything done to advance his research in a surprisingly short time. . . I recall something he said at his last lecture. He shared his thoughts that the strongest research on DNA in the future would come in the area of embryology. . In retrospect, it seemed he did not grasp how long it would take to elucidate the molecular biology of the molecule he had just characterized. He seemed not to grasp that embryology would probably be one of the last areas where we would gain understanding of the functions of DNA. . . His lectures set my mood and attitude about being at Harvard and it’s giving me amazing educational opportunities.” . . . How amazing! Such an enriching experience . . Have a lovely #dnaday!

Evet tabi ki zor zamanla ilerleyen bir hastalığın olması, evet tabi ki dibe vurduğum anlar oluyor, tabi ki yürüyüşünüze, oturup-kalkışınıza, merdiven çıkışınıza imrenerek bakıyor ve içimden "ne kadar rahat yapıyorlar tüm bunları" diye geçiriyorum ama pes etmiyorum. Asıl önemli olan da bu zaten pes etmemek. Bir de güzel nokta artık ilaç alabiliyor olmam! Yani artık hastalığım da ilerlemiyor ve hatta bir şeyleri geri kazanıyorum! Geçen sene bugün yaptığım paylaşımda FDA ve EMA onaylı bir ilacın ülkemizde de SGK kapsamına alınması gerektiğini anlatmıştım yine laboratuvar önlüğümle. Bu sefer DNA gününde 2 doz ilaç almış durumdayım! Bu ne müthiş bir şey biliyor musunuz? Üstelik kardeşim de ben de ufak ufak gelişmeler görüyoruz!! In the United States, DNA Day was first celebrated on April 25, 2003, by proclamation of both the Senate.
