Hi! I am Dorota, a young doctor from Poland, aiming for career in OB/GYN. I am writing to spread the message about a hunger strike that young doctors in Poland started on Monday due to extremely low salaries for residents, not enough spendings for Health Care, long queues to specialists and extremely overworked medical staff. #mediciansonstrike Since Monday, 2.10.2017 a group of 20-30 young doctors', nurses and EMTs are on a hunger strike. Thousands more have donated blood, registered as bone marrow donors, taken days of work etc. in solidarity. The reason : medical residents are overworked, understaffed (lowest index of doctors:patients in Europe), and very much underpaid! Residents, eg. young doctors earn under €600 per month - which is slightly above the minimal wage. Our demands : increased spending on healthcare, from the current 4% GDP to normal European levels. The average GDP spent on healthcare in Europe is 6.8%, with the UK spending 9.9%, and the USA spending 17%. When compared to other nations outside Europe- Malaysia spends 5.7%, Zimbabwe 6.7%, and Uganda 7.2%! This would allow for better equipment, better training, more medical staff would not emigrate abroad looking for better salaries. We have been in fruitless talks with the Polish government for 2 years now, and now the national media is beginning to stir animosity towards us. However the hunger strike is ongoin and for now, 3 strikers have been forced to leave due to their deteriorating health condition. Całym sercem popieram protest lekarzy rezydentów. Sama jestem rezydentką i mam dużo szczęścia w życiu, ponieważ mój mąż nie jest lekarzem i godnie zarabia. Dzięki temu jesteśmy w stanie się utrzymać i realizować nasze marzenia. Moja pensja na specjalizacji deficytowej (czyli jednej z tych, w której potrzeba najwiecej lekarzy) to 2500zł netto, koledzy, którzy wybrali inne specjalizacje zarabiają 2200zl. Koleżanki, które maja dzieci często oddają cała swoją pensje na nianię. Nie dziwie się, że wielu moich kolegów decyduje się na pracę za granicą lub odchodzi z zawodu. Pamiętajcie proszę, że wielu lekarzy, których spotykacie to rezydenci. Nie są to stażyści tylko pełnoprawni lekarze, którzy się wami opiekują. Często za cenę własnego zdrowia oraz życia rodzinnego.
