Prong collars: as barbaric as they look, they are actually THE least invasive training tool out there. They are designed to not put pressure on a dogs trachea or to be able to choke a dog. We have all seen a dog in a flat collar at the end of the leash, pulling its owner, and gasping for air. You will never see a dog in a prong collar doing this though. Why? Because it’s specifically designed not to. - Will a dog make an audible on a prong the first time it wears one or whine on the walk because it can no longer pull and lunge like it used to? It might. But we also see dogs make audibles on slip leads, martingales, and harnesses. The dog is protesting any sort of leash pressure, it is not in pain. - We see a lot of leash reactive dogs become a little more whiney or unsure on the walk once we stop the reactivity. This is not because the dog is in pain. It’s because the dog is finding a new coping mechanism. It all goes away eventually. The more you practice the good stuff and teach the dog what you want, all of the nonsense straightens itself out.
