The dog in this video was struggling with getting in a car. The more the owner tried, the more the dog practiced avoiding the task which led to the owner picking the dog up to get her in the car. Avoidance is based in uncertainty, not stubbornness but once the owner picked the dog up the avoidance became the habit. So opening the car door triggers the dog to freeze which leads to frustration in the owner. The frustration confirms the uncertainty to the dog which reinforces the avoidance. Now the owner thinks the dog has an issue getting in the car and the dog thinks the owner also has an issue about the the car and the cycle repeats itself for the next 10 years. The 3 things I changed was adding a step, using different energy, and using a quicker pace. By adding the extra step to the car I made it easier for the dog to figure out the process. We always preach calmness but when working with avoidance, excitement is an energy that can help motivate the dog to open up. I also moved a bit quicker to prevent the dog from having the opportunity to shut down. She went from shut down to jumping in with the 3 repetitions you see here. I’ve been thinking a lot about resting this week. With our return to Denver, we’re all running around trying to get as much time in the mountains and with friends as possible. We’re all exhausted. I posted last week about exercise for dogs. This week, I’m reminded of the importance of rest, too. Make sure your dog knows how (and maybe when) to relax. Make sure they get some rest days, some time to sleep in the sun, some time to be alone, and plenty of high-quality sleep. It’s totally possible to overstimulate your dog, which can both create a buildup of stress and exhaustion AND teach your dog to expect insane levels of exercise and interaction. Saint update: Now this makes for a happy father’s day for me! . I’m sure you all remember Saint, and his owner who had all the issues with their previous training situation. And if you followed the story, you know we took Saint in, on the house, and did a one week intensive with him. (The story was that he was too compromised to be e-collar trained.) . Well, Saint, and his owner both killed it, and Saint was more than up to the task of some higher level training. (We did a full e-collar program in that week.) The good news was, he was actually a well put together GSD. Clear headed, stable, and pretty darn solid. He had his issues - brattiness, mouthing/biting, jumping on people, reactivity on walks, and of course, zero reliable obedience. But all that was easily sorted. . Well, excuse the poor quality of this video, but I had to share it anyway. I just received it from Saint’s owner. And while we created the foundation for this, the major credit goes to his awesome owner (who’s 68!) for going even further beyond the basics, and is now having a blast teaching Saint to Heel off-leash.
