Just dropping by to show off my girl's heel in public and mention a few things! Her heel has improved so much in the last few months. She is ignoring people, babies, kids, shopping carts, dropped items, everything! We haven't run into another service dog recently, so we aren't sure about that yet. . . I also wanted to talk about a few things I've run into and thought about a lot recently. . . First thing: head halters. I don't like them. I didn't want to use one. Quimby had a horrible experience with them as a puppy, so we had to work on it A LOT before we could try it. BUT she is learning not to sniff in stores (a normal dog behavior), and I can't bend over to lure her head with a treat. So we use a head halter. It is not a muzzle. It is not for punishment. It is not required for service dogs. It doesn't mean she is aggressive. And it is to be paired with positive reinforcement training. And hopefully in a few months we'll not need it again! . . Second thing: Service dogs need to be impeccably groomed. Quimby hates nail trims. We are working on it to develop a fear free nail maintenance routine. But for now, they are a bit long. I'm hoping by the end of the month with some counter conditioning, we will have manicured pup feet and a fear free routine! . . Here is one of their many great before/after videos. Description below! . Karma has been aggressive & isolated for a long time. The owners had tried everything, but Karma ended up controlling them! Their whole lives revolved around Karma's demands. EVERYTHING was on her terms. And yet, Karma was never relaxed at home; she whined, barked, demanded attention 24/7. It was hell inside her mind. . Karma became aggressive because of insecurity--she didn't respect her owners or anyone else. She was the pack leader; and followers cannot tell pack leaders what to do. So when they encountered strangers/dogs outside, Karma set the rules and ignored her followers (AKA owners). . However, the rules Karma set were based on an insecure, unbalanced mind, which is why you see explosive, unprovoked aggression. Karma is a great example of why dogs should never allowed to control the household--they will become deeply unstable & unhappy. The aggression was merely a symptom. . So our task was to earn her respect, teach her healthy behavior, and then pass the baton to the owners. . For this case, I brought my whole pack. Jacob has rehabbed many aggressive dogs with me; he is a natural leader who sets rules with new dogs right away. Today was Sophie's first big aggression case--she did great by staying calm & friendly! My husband (not a behaviorist, but a great assistant ) had the strength & poise to walk Karma, and maintain control when she attacked. . Today Karma & Koda's owners report that they successfully walked past dogs/strangers! Sometimes, all clients need is to "see it to believe it." That confidence boost allowed them to become pack leaders. CONGRATS!

Quimby demonstrating the start of her task of item retrieval in our local Hobby Lobby! . . She is almost there with her retrieval and now just needs practice with varying item sizes, shapes, and textures and various environments. I have learned to wait to train new public tasks until she has relaxed in the store that we are in. . . We went to a Target store the other day, and it was so busy. She got a little overwhelmed and pretended to forget her retrieval skills, so we worked on basic obedience instead. It's really important to go at the pup's speed and set them up for success. . . I was so proud that our next public outing she retrieved so perfectly! And even retrieved her leash for me too. . . Eventually she'll be able to help me shop and save my spoons for more important things, like fetch! . .
