This cartoon can be misleading. Why? Because it portrays the so-called pushy dog in an almost angry or belligerent way. While it’s true that dogs are very well capable of bullying other dogs, the illustration calls for a deeper understanding of what is truly going on. . Many dogs have what is referred to as “play deficiency”. These are dogs who lack the ability to read the cues of other dogs, but they also are incapable of giving off the proper cues as well. Because they can’t read when the other dog is signaling for play, or signaling a lack of interest, they typically move in for engagement regardless of what the other dog is feeling. . And because they’re unable to give off the correct play cues they begin to engage with overexcitement, hyperactivity, or overly assertive movements. All of which can lead to miscommunication and places the other dog in the defensive. It becomes a case of overwhelm for the other dog and they can in turn act negatively towards the dog who’s only intention was to play. . Dogs with play deficiencies rarely come off as angry or intentionally bullying. These dogs can be very friendly. They often have a genuine interest and desire in wanting to play and engage in a positive way. They simply just don’t know how. . Why does this happen to some dogs? It could be because of a lack of socialization but most commonly is a dog who has been weaned away from his mother and littermates much too early. This is where they will begin to learn bite inhibition, control over their jaws, body pacing, the ability to read cues and signals in other dogs, etc. A dog without this early formative experience rarely grows to develop them and they can live their entire lives without fully understanding how to communicate with other dogs. . #dogtrainingtips #doghelp #dogtrainer #dogissues #fearfuldog #bullyingdog #dogbodylanguage #dogproblems #dogtrainingadvice #maltany #albanyny #saratogasprings #saratoga #troyny #upstatenewyork #upstateny
