How To Help Make Exercise A Habit

Whether you are beginning your fitness journey or trying to recommit to exercise again, I think most people would agree the hardest part of it is the mental aspect over physical. It’s challenging to make time for exercise when we aren’t used to it!
.
These are some tips that helped me after my surgery since that was essentially taking me back to square one! It was hard mentally to make it a habit again even though I really needed to strengthen my muscles for rehab.
.
1️⃣ Short Workouts: Exercise doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal & take hours! Thinking about it this way can keep you from wanting to even begin. Try lunges while you wait for your food in the oven or ab work while you watch your fave show. This gets your body used to moving & it’s easier to convince yourself to do 5 min vs. 30 min.

2️⃣ Small Goals: “Go to the gym 5 days a week” can be too ambitious when just starting. If we miss 1 day, we feel discouraged & potentially give up. Tiny goals throughout the day/week give us the instant gratification & tell our brain we are successful vs. a failure. After time, this motivates you to make the goals gradually bigger!

3️⃣ Enjoyable Movements: Pick activities you like to do. If you hate the treadmill, it’s not where you want to start. It will leave you hating your workout & less likely to want to go again. Bike, hike, dance, walk, swim, do yoga… the options are endless!
.
Don’t think of exercise as an all or nothing thing or something you can only do in a gym. Any movement you can do & integrate into your day to day will help build this habit!

So this past Friday was my surgaversaryI cannot believe It’s been one year since my surgery. A total of 81lbs down. This past year has been a roller coaster of emotions seeing my body transform into what I thought was never possible for me. Accomplishing things I never thought I would be able to at the gym or just in everyday life activities. Even the little things like being able to cross my legs when I sit lol. I am human so I do still indulge in some of my favorite foods though I keep it extremely minimal and try to find healthy substitutes for most. I am comfortable and confident in my own skin more than I have ever been before.
