Y’all... my Dolly Sods Wilderness map is finally finished! What a joy it’s been to translate my love for this unique wilderness area into this piece. I also made some really lovely prints of various sizes of this map, and you can find the link to those in my bio! . Dolly Sods is interesting on so many levels, and this map features just a few of the components that make it so special. . If you look closely at my illustration, you’ll find a beaver and its dam & lodge, a blue crayfish, a carnivorous sundew plant, wild blueberries, Bear Rocks overlook, my backpacking friend Gabby crossing Red Creek, lichen, cranberry plants, a black-throated green warbler, and an Eastern milksnake. . My backpacking bestie Gabby crossing the mighty Red Creek in my current project, an illustrated map of Dolly Sods Wilderness! . @gabbscro thru-hiked the entire 2,190 mile long Appalachian Trail with her mom recently and she’s one of those friends that inspires me to do hard things. I took the epic reference photo that I used for this illustration of her crossing the river after a rainstorm on a backpacking trip together last spring. . *Warning*: if you go on an outdoor adventure with me, there’s a good chance I’ll sneak a picture of you looking fierce and weave ya into one of my maps

Sunrise color explosion

Say hey to my little beaver friend, just one of the many critters that are featured on my Dolly Sods Wilderness illustrated map. Will share the finished map with y’all super soon! . . I discovered an epic multi-level beaver dam and lodge on a hike at Dolly Sods recently and let me just say... beavers are brilliant! Sure, they can totally screw up hiking trails with their beaver kingdom creations and that definitely got me lost a couple of times, but man... they are incredible architects. For example, did you know that many of their lodges have an underwater backdoor for instant swimming access? . Also, I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying using this palette of handmade, natural watercolors from Kirsten at @hushwingwatercolors . . Psssst: Kirsten is coming to my uncles’ farm in Wellsburg, West Virginia this Labor Day weekend for the Earthtones Outdoor Watercolor Retreat that I’m hosting! Getting back to some shots from the east with this pre-sunrise view at the Dolly Sods in West Virginia. The Bear Rocks section of the sods contains lots of weathered rocks, forming all sorts of interesting shapes.
