I don’t have to dig deep down to know that this quote speaks to me on so many levels. . . As a music teacher, I always have self doubt. I’m always looking at other teachers for inspiration and lesson plan ideas. I always want to grow and learn more so that I can give my students the best musical experience possible. But I’m only going into year 4 of teaching. I can’t compare myself to people in year 10, 15 or 20. I can only compare myself to the teacher I was yesterday, last week, or last year. . . Even though I know this, that doesn’t mean that I don’t still look at more experienced teachers and say to myself “I’m a bad teacher because I’m not as good as the teacher at this school.” . . I’m sure you feel this too. Maybe with teaching or maybe with something else. Here is another part of my life that relates to this quote. . . I started a journey a few months ago to try and live a healthier lifestyle. I started working out regularly and tried to get my eating habits in check. I also took a plunge to become a coach through the company who has been changing my life while in this journey. . . I took a huge risk. I was terrified. Honestly, I still am at times. I get scared to make posts. I get scared to record my workouts. I get scared that people don’t care. I get scared that even though I’m SO PASSIONATE about the results I’m getting and the journey I’m on, no one will want to go on the journey with me. . . I see other coaches set BIG goals and reach them. And I say to myself, if they can reach those goals, why can’t I just reach a small goal I set for myself? . . I let fear of not being as good as someone else stop me. It freaks me out. . . But let me tell you...every time I post on Instagram or document my life somehow in stories, I’m pushing past that. I’m pushing past the fear. I won’t let it stop me from setting goals and teaching them. It doesn’t matter how small or how large, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. . . I’m tired of living it fear. I hope you are too.

I went from being completely convinced that songwriting just isn’t “my thing”, to suddenly jotting down words and thoughts on anything, anywhere, all the time, recording spur-the-moment melodies on my phone in public bathrooms, and hearing guitar parts in my dreams. I’ve come to realize there’s a certain “hump” you have to get over with tasks that are outside of your comfort zone... but once you surpass the inevitable climb, it sort of feels like you’ve unlocked a new piece of your brain. I was hesitant about heading into the city center of Strasbourg after the tragedy that occurred on Tuesday night - and I was advised by a local that everything would be shut down. Well, I decided to go regardless and I was happy to see that with the exception of the Christmas market (for obvious reasons), everything was open - and busy! People were shopping, eating, drinking, and remembering those who lost their lives with a memorial. I know not everyone would agree, but like these folks visiting from all around the world, I refuse to be terrorized from living my life. Otherwise, we’re giving these monsters what they want. #sharksmile Heading over to focus on white sharks for a week with #finsattached marine research and conservation. Took this shot of a white shark in August. It's incredible being so close 2 these highly misunderstood sharks, studying their behavior is fascinating especially when the visibility is good and I get to observe and record the "conversations" they have with one another. The body language is something I hope to share more of, to empower people to better understand sharks and therefore avoid adverse interactions based on observed consistent behavior. There are a lot of good questions out there from people wondering what thy can do to avoid adverse interactions and while I will have to summarize in Instagram caption and maybe add a few comments to finish text: the short version: There are more people now going in the water than ever before. Sharks do migrate and we are seeing that they utilize certain areas more heavily during certain seasons and certain times of the day. These areas once identified through tagging can and should be shared with the public to help reduce adverse interactions. If there are areas close to harbor entrances these areas usually show more shark activity due to fish being cleaned and the scraps being dumped in the water and drifting out. Surf breaks near channels caused by river mouth entrances often have a higher presence of sharks especially after heavy rains when a lot of debris and possibly dead animals are flushed out. Sharks tend to prefer areas with convergent currents as it's an easier way to pick up the scent of potential prey items (think dog sticking it's head out the window of a car) and the changes in water temperature are more ideal as their ampullae of lorenzini are able to more acutely detect lower electrical impulses in slightly cooler temps. Disclaimer I am stereotyping and generalizing behavior, species behavior changes with environmental conditions, especially in regards to visibility and the lack or abundance and location of potential prey items.
