What a fun Saturday! The double whammy of #ArtAWhirl2019 plus @doorsopenmpls kept us busy all day long, starting with an informative visit to the @minneapolis_police_department’s K9 Kennel.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ There are 16 dogs in this elite unit. The training is intense, making this one of the toughest and most coveted jobs in the MPD. Leo here is a 5.5-year-old East German Shepherd and the partner of Y.C. Edwards. Officer Edwards applied four times before she was accepted into the unit; now she’s one of its most senior-ranking members. Leo — whose name stands for “law enforcement officer” — is her third police dog to date. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The MPD sources its shepherds from Germany and the Czech Republic, which are believed to have the finest blood lines in the world. Landing these primo pups is competitive, as the MPD is bidding against police forces and militaries from around the world.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Did you know MPD dogs do double duty, too? They’re trained to protect and to search for narcotics or explosives. Learning how the training works during today’s demos was fascinating, but what we really loved was observing the unbreakable bonds between the officers and their dogs.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Doors Open Minneapolis continues tomorrow, with free behind-the-scenes tours of and access to 115 venues throughout the city. The K9 unit is open from 10am to 5pm, with demos until 3pm. Other notable #doorsopenmpls participants include the Hennepin County Jail, @minneapolisfed, @minneapolis_rowing_club, @wingyounghuie art gallery, @vandusenmansion, and the rarely-open-to-the-public Scottish Rite Masonic Center.

Across from the humming patios of St. Anthony Main, a tangle of trees and electrical equipment hide a slice of Minneapolis history. A sturdy brick edifice over 100 years old, the Hennepin Island Powerhouse opened in 1908 to power streetcars. Now it powers the homes of about 14,000 Xcel Energy customers — in exactly the same way, using pretty much the exact same equipment. Members of the public can get a glimpse of the past this weekend, during Doors Open Minneapolis. The powerhouse is one of dozens of buildings that will be open to the public for tours.
