Today’s Inspiration: Zandra Rhodes
Like the benevolent fashion Goddess she is, Zandra Rhodes released a 500+ image archive of her incredible body of work online (and it’s free to dig through) in 2013. This was a super cool thing to do, and not just because the clothing is drop-dead gorgeous. She’s one of an increasingly smaller group of designers who use processes to create clothing that require a team of artisans who use specialized old school techniques. Designers like Rhodes have prolonged the life of artisanal craft that is literally going extinct.
Rhodes used fabrics she decorated by hand to make the clothing she designed, looks that seem to grow from some pretty incredible fashion illustrations. For the span of her career (and she still works) she used a traditional, done-by-hand process for creating the patterns on the textiles she used in her apparel. This comes from her training, Rhodes had studied textile design in college and her fabrics are integral to the look of her designs. The fabrics she uses are Silk-screened in-house before pieces are/were cut, sewn and then hand embellished.
Back in 1970, Diana Vreeland curated a collection of images for a Vogue spread that Rhodes credits for launching her career. The images were of the clothing from Rhode’s first collection, modeled by Natalie Wood. Though she evolved her esthetic over the years, looking at her body of work you can see how her vision developed in her textiles; from boho to a sort of glam-punk hybrid and beyond.
The best description I’ve read online of Rhodes’ work is “audacious but feminine”. Given that she designed for both Princess Diana and Freddie Mercury, you can see how such a phrase is apt.
It’s not just traditional handicrafts that Rhodes’ loves- fascination with the preservation of garments led to the founding of the Fashion and Textile Museum, a contemporary fashion & textile museum in London. ••• #ZandraRhodes #FashionAndTextileMuseum #LondonStyle #HandMade #Traditional #Handicrafts #FashionAsArt #HighFashion #WearableArt #HauteCouture #Couture #FashionDesign #FashionDesigner #FashionHistory #CostumeDesign #CostumeHistory #HistoryOfDress #DressHistory #TodaysInspiration
The ultimate Unsuitable Sideline Attire this weekend, we are on tour with 17 teenagers playing rugby in Cornwall. This foamy 1950s dress is a perfect tribute to Cornish waves and the coast here, a beaded crash of the sea encrusted around the bodice @kerrytaylorauctions #1950s #1950sdress #1950sfashion #1950sstyle #beadeddress #straplessdress #cornwall #cornishcoast #seafoamgreen #ballgown #rugbytour #newquay #fashionhistory #dresshistory
One final piece of shimmering @Dior that combines with an epic finale for Unsuitable Sideline Attire. My eldest played in the Devon Cup Final today and although victory was not theirs, it was an exciting match. The individually sequinned petals of the 1949 Junon dress and the strapless bodice would make the most perfect extravagant OTT rugby mum statement @vamuseum #rugbymum #vintagedior #diorshow #diorexhibition #diordress #junondress #sequins #coutureembroidery #straplessdress #1940sdesign #1940sdress #diorexhibition #fashionexhibition #dresshistory #fashionhistory
Green chiffon falls from a gold lamé waist tie, a deep burnished V that wraps around the torso to fasten at the back.
