We went the the Heysham Viking Festival yesterday and had the BEST time. I really hoped there'd be spinners in the reenactment village and I wasn't disappointed. I never asked her name, but the woman in the first picture ( who shall now be called Viking lady for the duration of this post) was incredibly lovely and knowledgeable and I spent ages talking to her about fleece and spinning and natural dyeing. She told me about a spinner called @josefinwaltin (whose vids on YouTube I'm now obsessed with) and and explained the dyeing processes with her yarns. The blue particularly caught my eye. This was dyed with woad, which I'd heard of but wasn't aware of the incredible blue it could create. Viking lady is a gardener, so she gave me some woad seeds to plant and tips on how to grow, cultivate and harvest it. She also gave me a little Manx Loaghton wool top to spin on my spindle (which I'd brought along just in case...) and it is a dream to spin. The boy wanted to see the battles but I was more interested in the garments. I spotted another Viking lady who was nalbinding a hat and now I have to find out more about that.The rabbit holes to disappear down just grew tenfold since yesterday.
