The French capital ship Dunkerque flies British colors off Spithead in 1937 for the coronation of King George VI. She was not yet in commission when she was sent to Portsmouth to represent France.
-
Dunkerque, interchangeably referred to as both a “cuirasse” (battleship) and “croiseur de bataille” (battlecruiser) in French, was laid down as the latter though her classification drifted towards battleship by the start of WWII. When design work began in 1930, the London Naval Treaty had just created two new classifications of ship by defining “Light” vs “Heavy” cruisers, and had restricted the tonnage and gun caliber of both destroyers and submarines. This focus on tonnage in the Treaty Era would foster attempts to capitalize on allowable weights and features and led to a variety of designs that did not fit any of the standard WWI or WWII classifications, effectively blurring the lines between accepted ship types; at the root of this age of constrained innovation were the controversial amalgamations of features that became the Panzerschiffe, Dunkerque, and the Scharnhorst class, all of which are still hotly debated today.
-
Furthering the confusion over Dunkerque, the call for designs in 1930 specifically requested a battleship. Yet at least two of the subsequent three designs considered were labeled as battlecruisers, despite one being 37,000 tons. These designs refused to sacrifice neither speed nor protection; ultimately, 35.9% of Dunkerque’s displacement would be devoted to armor, not a far cry from the 39.2% dedicated in the 10,750-ton larger Richelieu. Both are battleship-sized protection allocations. Yet Dunkerque was only armored against the 280mm shells of the Deutschland class, and the reactionary construction of the Scharnhorsts spurned an up-armoring of the follow-on sister to resist both the Germans and the then-rebuilding Italian dreadnoughts.
-
Dunkerque did not initially serve as a battlecruiser, though in 1939 her role morphed towards hunting raiders. Rather than comprising the fast arm of the battlefleet, she was initially the nucleus as the flagship of the Atlantic Squadron, which included the carrier Béarn and the 3 Bretagne-class Dreadnoughts.
